The description will explain a long, thin island in the Tennessee River visible from Eva Beach in Benton County, TN.
In 1867, the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis (NCStL) Railroad constructed a massive bridge over the Tennessee River at this spot, connecting the towns of Eva and what is now Old Johnsonville. At the time, this was on land, but raised above the river on a levee to approach the tall bridge. With the construction of Kentucky Dam upstream, this turned the river into a lake as the water level rose. The railroad had to relocate the bridge in 1945 to parallel the US70 highway bridge at New Johnsonville.
At Eva Beach, there is a segment of track and a historic marker which explains the area. Also suggested, at the Pilot Knob Interpretive Center at nearby Forrest State Park, there is a scenic overlook where you can see this as well as the remains of concrete trestle supports.
