In 1978, there was a railroad disaster in Waverly. Two days after a train with flammable liquids derailed, there was a large explosion killing several recovery officials and locals. Near this location has been a museum and memorial centered around a caboose.
This is what the derailment site looked like a few years later. The museum is just to the left of the photo. The modern reroute of highway US70 on the route was not there are the time. The CSX building is still there. The photo was taken from the highway 13 overpass.
