Stewart Station was a stop in Houston County along the Memphis, Clarksville & Louisville Railroad. It was the first settlement in Houston county, established in 1860 in honor of local early settler Duncan Stewart. By 1878, the town had a population of 100 and contained stores, shops, saloons, a school, church, a shingle factory and this lime kiln. The limestone of Houston County was considered a superior grade and caused the area to flourish during the Reconstruction era. Today, this is one of five lime kilns still standing in the county. The road in the picture is highway TN147 and is located between the town of Tennessee Ridge and the Tennessee River.
