In 1978, there was a railroad disaster in Waverly. Two days after a train with flammable liquids derailed, there was a large explosion killing several recovery officials and locals. Near this location has been a museum and memorial centered around a caboose.
Inside the museum is this mounted railroad spike celebrating the Tennessee Homecoming of 1986. The plaque recognizes both Seabord System and Norfolk Southern which were the two primary railroads in the state at the time.
