Burritt College was a Church of Christ affiliated school which started in 1848 (which is the date on this stone gate built by students) as the first coeducational college in the South. Some of the buildings remain in addition to the historic gate. Here is the text of the historical marker for the school: Established 1848 through the efforts of Elihu Burritt, a blacksmith who intended that the youth of his community should get the benefits of education denied to him. It closed it's doors in 1939 as a result of the development of the public school system and improvement of communication facilities.
