As of the 2010 census, Van Buren County has 5,548 residents making it the second smallest county by population in Tennessee. Accordingly, the courthouse here is also one of the smallest in the state. The two story brick building is nearly square. It's the third courthouse for the county, all of which have been located here in the town square. It has a hipped roof and is topped by a rectangular cupola. About 10-15 years ago, there was a slight change to the appearance as the metal roof was added and the siding on the cupola which had been black was painted white. Construction on this courthouse began in 1903 but a tornado damaged it during construction, delaying it's completion.
