Capitol Theater sign at dusk - Lebanon, TN
Antique Archaeology Radio Neon Sign - Nashville, TN Antique Archaeology is the antique store featured on the History Channel TV Show American Pickers. They have a store in Nashville at Marathon Village, a factory which made the Marathon Motor Works cars over a century ago. The most interesting things in the store are not for sale and part of the owner's personal collection. Instead, they mostly sell show merchandise like shirts, stickers, button's etc. There was a note where this sign was featured on season 8 episode 6. play.history.com/shows/american-pickers/season-8/episode-6 In this episode, the show travels to California where they meet a man who paid about $100 for the sign when it was to be removed from its original location in Los Angeles. The guys on the show paid him $1500 for it. It has not been painted but neon tubes have been added to it. The area at the top which says Nashville was in the show a broken glass window - perhaps was the station's call sign.
Vintage metal Cardui sign - Cumberland Gap, TN has helped women 50 years! This vintage sign was seen on the side of the old Drug store in Cumberland Gap, TN. (I don't think this business is still open, but might be preserved as a museum.) Wine of Cardui was made by the Chattanooga Medicine Company. One bottle was 9 ounces, and it was 19% alcohol, so I'm sure it helped numb whatever monthly pains a woman was struggling with. The name comes from the ingredient Carduus Benedictus (a.k.a. Blessed Thistle). I'm not sure how much of this sign is natural rust, and how much is bullet holes from people upset by the snake oil. They advertised with wall murals also, but here's one other metal sign in Smithville, TN in better shape: flic.kr/p/6Rk19x In one other ironic twist, a few days ago I posted a picture of the church which was established by the company which made this product,
M.T. Gossett Bldg. neon sign (2023) - Nashville, TN When the Gossett Building at 1201 Church St. in Downtown Nashville was torn down around 2016, the old neon sign was preserved. The new building is known as the Gossett Apartments. A similar modern sign was placed in about the same location which said "The Gossett on Church." However, in 2023 this sign was placed on the 12th Ave. side of the building. You may be able to see it by car along 12th Ave. but to see it at eye level from Church St., you'd probably need to be on foot and know where to look. Here's how it looked in 2010: flic.kr/p/7RJAeS
Ellis Restaurant neon sign - Chattanooga This is a once-fantastic sign for a long-abandoned restaurant in downtown Chattanooga. It's located across the street from the Choo Choo. According to this article, it closed in 1979. www.chattanoogan.com/2002/9/21/26751/What-Did-That-Old-Bu... The sign reminds me of a theater marquee, with the name out front with some chaser light bulbs on the front and underneath. Then, there's the neon for all of their entree's: Steaks, Chops, Seafood, Spaghetti, Charcoal Broiler, Live Lobster. They topped the front with two neon frogs (and now-gone leaping frogs between them) to appear to jump from side to side. Behind this, It looks like the building façade had shiny black porcelain tiles. Here, Steaks and Chops were stencil painted. If it's been closed over 40 years, it's amazing it hasn't deteriorated even further. I think I walked past this place in 1994 and have a vague memory of it being in decent shape.
Park use our easy entrance to Restaurant Here's a fantastic old neon sign which was always there, but hard to see for a while. This is located in Monteagle, TN where highways US41 and US41A meet. Today, this restaurant is the Depot Cafe (Home of the Bigfoot Burger). I'm not sure how long they've been here, but they've been the proprietor since the oldest Google Street View in 2007. Maybe they built this sign decades ago, or maybe it was different back then. I assume Park is a suggestion and not the name of the place back then. I've driven through here many times and never noticed this. The other side has a new sign covering it up. (confirmed on Google street view since 2007.) I assume if this side was covered, the remaining neon tubes would have broke off. However, the back was noticeable this time because the sign has been rotated on the pole 90 degrees - it used to face the back of the parking lot.
Sporting Goods neon sign - Shelbyville, TN I don't know the history of this sign, but it's not original to this location. It was installed circa 2019 at a sports collectibles store. It's about 2 blocks east of the Shelbyville square along Depot St. (TN130)
New Tazewell City Hall sign It looks like an old neon sign was given a new life with a repaint for the newer building occupant. I don't know what the sign was for originally. update: This sign has since been repainted blue.
Rose Service Station - Tazewell, TN Rose's Gulf Service Station is a well-preserved 1930 gas station on the east side of Tazewell. It operates as a small museum, but usually not open. Still, as you look around, there are vintage signs, pumps, and other things you'd see at a 90 year old service station. It's located along the old alignment of highway US25E, but the vintage neon GULF in the back faces the new highway.
Fox & Locke neon sign - Lieper's Fork This is a rather new neon sign for the Leiper's Fork establishment which had formerly been Puckett's Restaurant and Grocery.
Quality Quick Cleaners - Nashville, TN This Dry Cleaner service in Nashville's Salemtown neighborhood went out of business around 2012, but the sign remains a decade later. The top says One Hour Service. Because of the slant, the bottom says the word SHIRTS with increasingly large letters. This is located along Buchanan St. between 10th and 11th Ave. Old view on Google Maps: www.google.com/maps/@36.1803873,-86.8036329,3a,75y,126.92... When you look through the years on google street view, it's become other businesses over the years, but appeared closed ont he day I took this. However, there was a guy selling Vacuums out of the trunk of his car.
Sparta Drive-In sign This one screen drive-in theater is located a couple of miles north of town along highway TN135. At one time, the sign had neon.
Loveless Cafe Neon Sign - Nashville, TN This southwest Nashville restaurant is a local landmark and this day was my first visit in 16 years. Their brochure used to mention Weatherman Willard Scott's claim they have the best biscuits in the world. The Motel has been closed for a long time and is used for retail shops instead. They now have a historic marker: In 1951, Lon and Annie Loveless began serving fried chicken, biscuits and jams at picnic tables to hungry travelers from Highway 100, then the main road between Nashville and Memphis. They soon converted their 4-room home into a restaurant, added the 14-room Loveless Motel, a smokehouse and the iconic neon sign. Known for scratch-made Southern meals using recipes passed down by Lon and Annie, The Loveless Café remains a staple that welcomes over half a million guests each year.
Purity Milk neon sign - Nashville, TN It's hard to find a good angle for the west side of this sign. This view with many obstructing power lines was taken from the Trevecca entrance. I rarely drive through here at night, so I have no idea if the alternating Purity and MILK neon or the chaser lights still work. The sign is located along Murfreesboro Rd. (US41/70S/TN1) just a few miles Southeast of downtown Nashville.
Sumner Drive-in Neon Sign - Gallatin, TN This vintage neon sign for the Sumner Drive-In is located at the Sumner County Museum in Gallatin, TN. A classic car is parked in front of it, so it had to be photographed at an angle, but I like the reflection off the car. The drive-in movie theater operated from 1947 to 1998.
Weiss Drive-In - Nashville While This sign is easy to see from the road, the drive-in sign is in the back of the parking lot at Weiss Liquors along Gallatin Pk. (old US31E) in East Nashville.
Comet Cleaners - Arlington, TX Comet 1 Hour Cleaners neon sign This is located in Arlington, TN along Division St., which used to be US80. US80 was decommissioned west of Dallas, so this highway is now TX180, which is the old main road connecting Dallas and Fort Worth.
Borden's Jewelers neon sign - Cookeville, TN Located on Broad St. between the Courthouse Square and Cream City Depot District.
New & Used Chevrolet Cars & Trucks This large neon sign is located at Edd Rogers Chevrolet in Sparta, TN. They also have a vintage gas pump in the showroom. It is located on the west side of Sparta along highway US70 next to the US70S & TN111 intersection.
Chevrolet OK Used Cars - Sparta, TN This large neon sign is located at Edd Rogers Chevrolet in Sparta, TN. They also have a vintage gas pump in the showroom. It is located on the west side of Sparta along highway US70 next to the US70S & TN111 intersection.
Maddux Building neon sign - Cookeville, TN The Maddux Building might date back to 1928, but I don't think the neon sign is that old. Google Street View shows this sign there about a decade ago, but not before. Thus, it's a relatively new sign made to look old - unless it was in storage or repair for a while. Also, it looks like building is a new addition, so it might be from somewhere else. This is on the south side of the Cookeville town square at the corner of Spring St. (US70N) and Washington Ave.
Palace Theater neon sign - Gallatin, TN Located in Historic Downtown Gallatin, the completely restored Palace Theater is the oldest silent movie theater still standing in Tennessee. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as part of the Gallatin Commercial Historic District) and hosts a variety of shows, movies and events. I previously photographed this sign in 2008. Back then, the neon tubes had not been replaced yet. See it here: flic.kr/p/4R8udj
Rusty Pepsi-Cola sign - Versailles Grocery The Grocery store in Versailles now operates as the Fried Tater Cafe. Check the link in the comments for more info on the store.
Bruton Snuff scaffold sign - Nashville, TN This neon scaffold sign is atop the building which produces Bruton Snuff, which is now owned by U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co. I have found it very challenging for many years to find a good vantage point to get a picture of this old sign. The trees up close to the building are quite tall.
Cunningham Rexall Drugs neon sign Located in New Tazewell, TN
Sleepy Bear Motel - Gatlinburg, TN This vintage motel is located along East Parkway(US321) a little over a mile from the heart of town. As referenced in the lower message, some of the rooms have a nice view of Dudley Creek.
Town Motel - Sneedville, TN This motel is located along Main St. (TN33) across from the Hancock County Courthouse. However, I think the motel is now closed as the first floor is now a clothing store.
HL&P neon sign - Galveston, TN This is the neon sign for the local electric service, Houston Light & Power Co. at the Galveston Division office. I like the neon light bulb atop the sign. Today, HL&P is known as Reliant Energy and the building contains lofts and a law office..

Busy Bee Drive-In - Clarksville, TN Sadly, this mom and pop restaurant in Clarksville looks to be out of business.
Neon Auctioneer Sign - Shelbyville, TN Here's a sign I've driven by many times before I realized this was a gem of an old neon sign. I suppose it was so rusty I never noticed the upper sign. I'd love to have seen it when it was working. The sign would be animated as the auctioneer would appear to be banging a gavel against a table. He also has a neon speech balloon with the word "SOLD!" The sign is located in Shelbyville, along US231 (Cannon Blvd.) near Lane Pkwy.
Frostee Freeze Drive-In neon sign - Tazewell, TN This Drive-in is in Tazewell along Youngstown Rd. (Old US25E) near the intersection of Broad St.
Pine Cove Motel - Nashville, TN Here's an old neon sign for the long gone Pine Cove Motel. I'm not sure what business is there right now, but it's not a motel. There's a tiny bit of neon tubing left hanging on to the E in Motel. This is located on Clarksville Pike (US41A) about 2-3 miles north of Briley Parkway and 2-3 miles south of Old Hickory Blvd.
Skateland - Memphis, TN In my endeavor to photograph everything that catches my interest around the great state of Tennessee, I maintain a list of over a thousand points of interest I would like to photograph. I have spent several years cultivating this list and visit many every year, while adding just as many. Every so often I find something fantastic that wasn't on my list. This massive neon sign is one of them. I was passing through Memphis on my way to something else when I was getting hungry. I considered eating at the Panchos here - just as my family used to do quite often as we would pass through town. But I was in a hurry and looking for something quicker. My GPS told me to take White Station Rd. to get to my next destination. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught a massive neon sign, but didn't get a good look at it. All I really saw were two red wings, so my first thought was it was a large neon Pegasus like the one which my dad told me lit up the Dallas skyline when he was a kid. You're probably more interested in the story of the sign than the story of me finding it, so this makes for a great read: www.memphisflyer.com/AskVanceBlog/archives/2009/07/19/ska...
JFG Special Coffee sign - Knoxville "The Best Part of the Meal" This 60 year old neon sign in South Knoxville which faces downtown was fully refurbished a few years ago. Until 2010, this sign was at a small parking lot aloung Council Pl. overlooking the Tennessee River. This is what it looked like from the street. This is what it looked like from the bridge. It underwent a complete renovation from Sept. 2010 to Sept. 2012 so that it would be in complete working order with 852 new light bulbs. It was moved to a higher location so that it's now in the parking lot of the Kerbela Temple overlooking Sevier Ave. It was relit during the Labor Day 2012 Boomsday Celebration. Here's the view from the bridge today.
Tennessee Central Railway neon sign This sign was built in the 1940s or 50s when Tennessee Central had a freight depot along 1st Ave. in downtown Nashville. Tennessee Central ceased operation in 1968 and the depot was demolished in 1973. At that time, the sign went into storage in a private collection. In 2016, the sign came up for auction and the Tennessee Central Railway Museum was the winning bidder. They restored all of the neon tubing and made the sign operational again. In August 2016, the museum put the sign up at their main building facing Willow St.

Advertised as "The Sole of Honor" the Selz shoe company in Chicago was in business from 1890 to 1929. This can be seen along Main St. in Columbia on the south side of the town square next door to Ted's. When a new building is built in this spot, it is unknown if the 90+ year old sign will be preserved. Go see it now to make sure you see it.

231 Plaza Inn - Lebanon, TN This motel is located on highway US231 a few blocks north of the town square in Lebanon
The Nations neon sign - Nashville, TN This neon sign is in front of the Nations Bar & Grill on 51st Ave in Nashville. However, the sign is also the unofficial welcome to The Nations neighborhood. This part of West Nashville is the area between I-40 and Centennial Blvd and has become one of the more trendy areas lately. As for the sign itself, The Nations is a re-purpose of an old sign. The neon tubing has been added in just the last few months. Before that, it had only been painted for the Nations for a couple of years. The sign had been blank for a long time before that as there once was an auto body shop here a long time ago.

Bales Florist neon sign - Nashville, TN This sign along Gallatin Pk. (US31E) has certainly seen better days. A. Schwab's Neon Sign - Beale St. A. Schwab dry goods store is the only remaining original business on Beale Street in Memphis, TN. Their motto is "If you can't find it at A. Schwab, you're probably better off without it!" Established in 1876 by Abraham Joseph Schwab, a Jewish immigrant from France, the store is a local tourist attraction with two floors of shopping and, between the first and second floors, a small balcony which houses the Beale Street Museum, a collection of Beale Street memorabilia along with several items and records of the Schwab family, which ran the store until 2011. It began as a men’s haberdashery, transitioned to a dry goods store, and later evolved into a seller of quirky merchandise. Products include various hoodoo items, assorted dry goods, and tourist memorabilia. A. Schwab's was also the retailer of the largest overalls in the world which sold two pair a year. The overalls were so large they hung from the ceiling. A. Schwab, the oldest store in the Mid-South, is housed in the oldest remaining building on Beale Street. The store was founded at another location on Beale Street and moved to 163 Beale Street in 1911 and expanded into 165 in 1922. Both of these buildings were constructed before 1890. Prior to the expansion, 165 Beale housed a Piggly Wiggly. The building is part of the Beale Street Historic District which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. Welcome to Memphis Vinyl Record sign If you are coming to Memphis from Mississippi along highway US51, once you cross the Tennessee state line (and Memphis City Limits), you will pass this Welcome to Memphis vinyl record album neon sign. In this part of town, US51 is also the Elvis Presley highway as your are on your way to Graceland. I have been told that this sign was put up to appear in a movie, but I can't find out which one. Eldorado Motel - Nashville, TN The historic Eldorado Motel sign is perhaps Nashville's least known neon treasure. I was unaware of this gem until reading Historic Nashville Inc.'s Civil Rights Walking Tour Brochure where it is stop #27. This is located at 2806 Ed Temple Blvd. (Down the road from the Ted Rhodes Golf Course.) The actual motel was torn down ca. 2011 and only the sign remains. Go see it while you can - I had to park at the golf course and walk. It's also off the road a bit, so it's easy to miss. Dr. Martin Luther King and Harry Belafonte spent the night here in Sept. 1961. King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference had arranged for Belafonte to perform at the Ryman Auditorium and they spent the night here. Even if there was no associated history, it's also a fantastic neon sign. It's a little worn down but most of the neon tubes are intact. There's a couple of flags up top. The neon word Pool is on a pool shaped part of the sign. Likewise, the neon T.V. is on an old black & white television set. To see more places which appeared in the Green Book, a tourist guidebook which listed businesses which were friendly to African-American motorists, check this link: www.arcgis.com/apps/MapJournal/index.html?appid=bf72b1fbd... 2020 Update: The motel sign was added to the 2020 Nashville Nine of historic endangered properties: historicnashvilleinc.org/announcing-the-2020-nashville-nine/

Prior to the US Highway system, this motel was along The Dixie Lee Highway, which was a combination of the Dixie Highway and the Lee Highway. Not too far to the west of here at the intersection where 11 and 70 (and formerly the Dixie and Lee Highways split) is the location of a small community called Dixie Lee Junction. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingston_Pike Originally, the name of this motel was the 11-70 Motor Lodge as seen by their 1930s era post cards

Gray's Neon Sign - Franklin, TN Gray Drug Co. was a longtime drugstore located along Main St. (US31) in Franklin. Frank Gray Jr. had the sign installed in 1952 at a cost of $860. In 1998, the Pharmacy closed, and a new tenant operated here as Gray's Cards and Gifts. Up until then, GRAY was in the blue space below Rx and DRUGS was the vertical portion. That store closed six years later and the building remained vacant for nearly a decade. Lorraine Hotel Neon Sign Flickr says this is my photo #8,000, although I'm not sure how many of that aren't public. As America honors Martin Luther King, Jr. on the third Monday in January, I'd like to share these photos of the National Civil Rights Museum that promotes the vision that Dr. King embraced. Walter Bailey purchased the Windsor Hotel in 1945 and renamed it the Lorraine Motel. Located close the the center of Memphis, during the days of segregation the motel catered to an upscale black clientele. In April 1968, King traveled to Memphis in support of striking sanitation workers. King stayed in room 306, located on the second floor of the Lorraine Motel. At 6:01 PM on April 4, 1968 while he was standing on the balcony outside his room, King was struck by a single bullet, causing him to fall backwards unconscious. Following the assassination, Bailey left Room 306 undisturbed. While the Motel remained open for a few more years, Bailey worked to preserve the motel as a historic site raising funds to Save the Lorraine. The Martin Luther King Memorial Foundation bought the motel in 1982. The Motel officially closed in 1998 as the property transformed into a museum. For architectural designs, the museum called upon McKissack & McKissack from Nashville, the first African American architecture firm in America. After purchasing adjoining property, the museum opened in Sept. 1991. Today, on the grounds of the museum, a wreath is placed at the balcony where King was hit. The original sign for the museum has been preserved outside. From this iconic photo from the balcony there are two cars visible below, and there are replicas of these two cars at the museum today. For now, customers of the museum are allowed to look into the window of Room 306.
Lorraine Motel Neon Sign As America honors Martin Luther King, Jr. on the third Monday in January, I'd like to share these photos of the National Civil Rights Museum that promotes the vision that Dr. King embraced. Walker Radiator Works neon sign - Memphis, TN Here's one neon sign that is simply fantastic. On my recent trip to Memphis, I wanted to find it although I didn't know where it was. I'm glad I found it right around the corner from the Sun studio. The sign still works and the company is still in business. At night, all of the lights act like chaser lights, like an arrow going through the radiator. The radiator has even sprung a neon leak! Based on some other recent photos I've seen, it looks like it got a nice fresh paint job in the last year or so.
Jerry Lee Lewis Cafe Honky Tonk This neon sign is located along the famous Beale Street in Memphis, TN. A couple of years earlier, the establishment here was Ground Zero Blues Club.
Bryant's Elgin Watches neon sign - Tiptonville, TN Located along Church Street in Tiptonville's central business district. The clock no longer works.
The Tivoli Theater - Chattanooga, TN The Tivoli Theater is a historic theater and opulent landmark in downtown Chattanooga that opened in 1921 at a cost of $750,000. It was one of the first air-conditioned public buildings in the U.S. The theatre was named Tivoli after Tivoli, Italy, has cream tiles and beige terra-cotta bricks, has a large red, black, and white marquee with 1,000 chaser lights, and has a large black neon sign that displays TIVOLI with still more chaser lights. Reflecting the Beaux Arts architectural style prevalent in late 19th century and early 20th century America, the theatre contains a high rose-and-gold coffered ceiling, the original box office, a grand lobby with a white terrazzo floor inlaid with forest-green marble and music-motif medallions, crystal chandeliers, an elegant foyer, and red velvet-plush chairs. The Tivoli opened on March 19, 1921 to a concert by the Tivoli Symphony, a screening of Cecil B. DeMille's 1921 film Forbidden Fruit, and a personal appearance by Forbidden Fruit's Mae Murray. The theater served Chattanooga well for several decades as the chief location for stage and film entertainment in Chattanooga, but went into a steady decline as modern movie theaters started to appear in Chattanooga in the 1950's. The Tivoli was, at one time, owned by the ABC TV network and was later leased to Chattanooga as a performing arts facility. The theatre was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in April 1973. The city of Chattanooga purchased the Tivoli in 1976 for $300,000 after the theater had been in disrepair for some years; Chattanooga's Department of Education, Arts, and Culture currently owns and operates the Tivoli. After the Tivoli closed on June 5, 1987 for renovations, the Tivoli reopened on March 29, 1989 with a recital by Marilyn Horne.
The Hearth Restaurant - Martin, TN This restaurant is along US45E on the north side of town.
Star Lite Inn - Memphis Located along US61 on the south side of town.
Beale St. Gifts neon sign
Pappy's Drive-In neon sign - Milan, TN Along 1st St. (US 45E)
Historic Engel Stadium sign Until a new stadium was built in 1999, the Chattanooga Lookouts played in one of the oldest baseball stadiums in the country, dating back to 1930. To me, one of the most notable features of the park was a Coca-Cola mural on the outfield wall in dead center field, which required a massive shot to hit one out over that wall. (I think I heard it was 490 feet.) According to legend, future Hall of Famer Harmon Killibrew was the only hitter to get one out over that wall. Below that wall was a sloped section with the name LOOKOUTS spelled out in flowers, and this slope was in play. The stadium stayed empty for a while, but recently a group has been formed to preserve the stadium. A couple of years ago, much of the outfield wall that runs along 3rd Ave was removed and you could see in from your car. Many of the baseball scenes from the Jackie Robinson movie "42" were filmed here in 2012. When I was in high school, our team came close to making the state tournament which was played here then (and maybe it still is). The stadium is also owned by the nearby University of Chattanooga.
Philips Light Bulb neon sign - Cookeville, TN Located along Jefferson Ave. (TN136) south of the Cookeville town square is this light bulb neon sign. The business with this sign is Williams Wholesale Supply and they apparently specialize in lighting fixtures. When I first learned of this sign, I did an internet search for Philips Light Bulb neon sign and this one was the only one I ever found, so maybe this store had it custom made. I probably looked at my photos of this sign fifty times before I noticed this is a 130V incandescent bulb. I've been looking for a place that sells 130V bulbs, so maybe I should have actually gone in the store instead of just paying attention to the old neon sign like I usually do.
Kelly Foods neon sign - Jackson, TN Located at what is now an abandoned building along US70 on the west side of Jackson is this old sign with much of the neon tubes missing. Still, a lot of effort went into this dual-sided sign. With heavy Irish imagery, We have a leprechaun who climbed the ladder up the side of a clover-laden kettle to stir the chili ingredients. Mostly faded at the bottom is the slogan "Will Steal Your Heart Away" I don't really have any memory of this company, but they went bankrupt in 2003 and were bought out by Vietti. Here is an old commercial of theirs on youtube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrIId2m9Rdw
The Family Restaurant & Motel - Jackson, TN Located on the road that used to be the main road into town, The Family Motel and Restaurant has quite a nice but faded sign. The property is located along Whitehall St. and used to be highway US70 (and TN1) but now the highway bypasses this area. Based on the two cars in the parking lot, I guess the motel is still open for business, but the restaurant is a casualty. (See the white arrow in the background? That points to the restaurant.) Below the No Vacancy sign is a hand painted sign for Ice 75¢ and if you look closely, it used to be 50¢. Perhaps you can use that as a guide for how old the sign is.
Bailey's Restaurant neon sign seen along highway TN22 near Parker's Crossroads. Close to Interstate 40.
Brownsville Bank sign - Brownsville, TN Located along Washington St. a couple of blocks south of the town square. Although the bank was established in 1869, they do not appear to be in business here anymore, but the new building owners must have decided to keep the sign.
Faded Coca-Cola Mural - Clarksville, TN This faded ad in downtown Clarksville is located on the side of a building on 1st street facing the newer City Hall, with Strawberry Alley as the side street. The space has been multiple ads over the years and the fading paint has rendered almost all of the words unreadable. In Larger letters, I also see a CA which makes me think there used to also be a Wine of Cardui ad here as well.
The Ghost Mural - Knoxville, TN Located along the side of the McClung building is a mural easily visible from Interstate 40. There are two things painted along the side of this old warehouse near downtown, and we'll start with the less interesting part. Philco. Your better buy. Color TV, VCR & Audio. When I hear the name Philco, I think about the 1930's radio owned by my grandfather and passed down through the family. I don't know what became of Philco over the years, but this wall ad for a nearby store that sells VCRs is estimated to date back to 1986-ish. Since it's ben over 25 years, what's underneath is starting to show. Something Groovy is underneath the ad and whatever it is, it's a shame you can't see it anymore. The artwork was comissioned by the World's Fair in 1982. Completed in 1981, it was apparently inspired by the artwork of Peter Max and painted by a UT Professor and student. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a vintage pre-philco view of the mural. However, For the full story, read this recent article from Metro Pulse Magazine: www.metropulse.com/news/2013/jun/26/ghost-mural-strange-i...
Blue Circle neon sign - Livingston, TN Blue Circle Hamburgers was a chain of fast food restaurants that was popular in East Tennessee a few decades ago. However, today only one location remains open. In my travels through East Tennessee, I have seen signs of some of the former locations repurposed for a new business. This is the only one I had seen in Middle Tennessee. I didn't realize they made it this far west. (Or maybe someone just liked the sign and brought it here.) Update: Fast forward a few years, I met someone who grew up in Livingston. This indeed once was a Blue Circle Hamburgers, but not for at least a couple of decades.
Rocket Express Quality Fuel sign - Celina, TN This old gas station sign is seen along Lake St. (which is a major road in town and probably used to be TN53). Sadly, they look to be out of business now
Renewal Barber Shop neon sign Located along Martin L King Blvd near downtown Chattanooga
Dari-Kreme - Cleveland, TN This local favorite has been serving ice creme cones since 1966. They are located on the south side of Cleveland along the Lee Highway (US11/64)
Hoskins Drugs - Clinton, TN Hoskins Drug Store must have had two locations over the years in Clinton, TN and this would be the older one. It looks as if they moved but the new owners thought it would be nice to keep the old sign here. This one is located along Market St., which is the older business district in town. The new location (also with a nice old neon sign) is located along Main St. across from the Anderson County Courthouse.
Sanitary Cleaners Neon Sign - East Ridge, TN Neon Pressed Shirts! East Ridge is a suburb of Chattanooga east of Missionary Ridge and near the TN/GA border. The main road through town is US41/76.
Cherokee Motel sign- Chattanooga Located on the northern side of Chattanooga is this old hotel that managed to stay open even though the primary highway through the area (US27) has been rerouted to a more modern freeway. (It is still state route TN8) At one time, it was a neon sign but all the neon tubes have been taken out.
Vintage Gulf Neon Sign - East Ridge, TN Probably not actually a Gulf anymore, but keeping the old sign up, the business looked like an independent mechanic shop. East Ridge is a suburb of Chattanooga east of Missionary Ridge and near the TN/GA border. The main road through town is US41/76. UPDATE: I drove by here again on 8/1/14 and the gulf sign was taken down, leaving just the metal scaffolding.
Chapman Restaurant - Lake City, TN Air Conditioned Private Dining Room - grAde Seen along Main St. (US25W) in the small Anderson County town
Big Time BBQ sign - Chattanooga This great sign is seen along US41/US76 Near I-24 at the base of Missionary Ridge. This sign makes me hungry.
Riverfront Parking Garage at Sunrise - Memphis, TN
Borden's Jewelers neon sign - Cookeville, TN
Central Rexall Drugstore neon sign - Jellico, TN
Old Sign - Kingsport, TN I'm not completely sure what business originally built this sign, but the establishment that owns the sign today is Hog Wild Saloon. In addition, there is a vacant motel behind the restaurant \ bar building. It's located on Stone Dr. on the west side of town near the intersection with Lynn Garden Dr. (Stone Dr. is also US11W and formerly TN1, Lee Highway and the Memphis-to-Bristol Highway, so it used to be a prime location.) One explanation I heard was this used to be Alladdin's restaurant and hence it had Aladdin's Lamp at the base of the sign. A different story is this used to be Candlelight Motel, so it's a candle on a candle stand. Perhaps both stories are true and the candle was added later. Any info would be appreciated.
Hoskins Restaurant (Good Food) - Clinton, TN Located along the main road through town (US25W) and across from the county courthouse. Hoskins and the Ritz Theater next door appeared to have an Art Deco storefront. Hoskins is also a Rexall Drug Store, so it looks like it started out as a soda fountain and the sign on the front of the door claims they have been voted the best burger in town.
See Incline Here / Coca-Cola sign Along the Lookout Mountain Scenic Highway (TN148) is a spot where the street crosses over Chattanooga's historic Incline Railroad. Along that bridge is a pedestrian scenic overlook. The parking spaces for this overlook are provided by Mountain Memories, a gift shop.
Ridgeview Motel - South Clinton, TN Air Conditioned! This still operational independent motel with it's vintage albeit crusty neon sign is seen along highway US25W in Clinton, TN. To the right of the V in RidgeView is the NO for No Vacancy.
Lusk Body Co. neon sign - Knoxville This was one of those rare times where the sun was at just the right spot in the sky where neither face of the sign was in the sunlight. This company which still seems to be in business is north of downtown
Thacker Christmas Inn & Restaurant The Christmas Season is upon us. However, for this hotel in Caryville, TN it's Christmas year round. I guess. (The hotel was under renovation with a construction fence completely surrounding the place. Maybe it will be open by Christmas 2013.) Because it was under construction, I drove around the place for 15 minutes until I could find an unobstructed view, which sadly was not on the sunlit side. I'm guessing it's still going to be a mom & pop owned place and not part of a chain. It's located along old US25W but still in business since it's next to Interstate 75
The Original Freezo - Knoxville, TN This restaurant is a North Knoxville landmark that has been along Central Ave. for many decades.
Talk of the Town Ice Cream & Eatery - Etowah, TN This neon sign is seen in the central business district of Etowah along US411
Friedman's Army/Navy Store Neon Sign Friedman's military surplus store has been located aong Hillsboro rd. (US431) for many years. I'm not sure when the Friedman's name was taken down, but that used to be at the top of the sign. The store has all types of surplus, such as compasses, tools, boots, helmets, camos, knives, etc. This photo was uploaded in honor of Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2012 2024 update: I hear this store is going out of business, so the sign maybe removed soon.
Vintage Firestone Neon Sign - Cleveland, TN At one time, this business must have been Roy's Alternator as that was painted over the lower part of the sign. Seen along US64 not far from the town square in Cleveland.
The Little Gold Mine neon sign - Lawrenceburg, TN Seen along US43
Southern Loans neon sign - Kingsport, TN For many years, Southern Finance & Thrift Corp. has been advertising loans for $200 and up at the downtown corner of Center and Cherokee. The sign was originally an advertisement for a different loan company, but when the sign was purchased for Southern, neon was added to the sign with their name.
Dude's Drive-In - Christiansburg, VA One day I was driving old US11 from Roanoke, VA to Bristol, TN when I got hungry for lunch. When I am on a road trip, I like to eat fast, but at the same time I'd like to eat at a place that I can't find where I'm from. Dude's was perfect for this. It didn't have a drive thru. It wasn't like Sonic where each parking space had a speaker to the inside. It just had a bunch of parking spaces and a sign that told me to "Sound Horn for Service." I didn't need to sound my horn as plenty or waitresses (or car hops, I presume) were on top of things during the busy time of day. Maybe this curb service is the way a lot of places do things, or at least used to do things, but it was a unique novelty for me. For a menu, there was a sign on the side of the building that listed their offerings (albeit without prices). I'd never been here before, so I didn't know if I ought to try the regular hamburger, the Big Burger, the Midget Burger or the Chuckwagon Burger. When the waitress made her way to my car, I asked her what she reccomend I order since I'd never been there before and was just passing through. She said the most popular items were the Dude Burger and the Chili Dog. I ordered one of each. Anytime a menu item includes the name of the place in the title, I guess it is a signature meal. I'm glad I ate there.
Dixie Cafe neon sign - Selmer, TN With a menu of Catfish, Chicken, Steaks and Seafood, the Dixie cafe was one of the most popular places to eat in Selmer for 50 years. The Cafe was located along the main road through town, which was also US45/64. The Cafe went out of business in 1997, and a few years later the building was razed while the old neon sign out frount was in ruin. In 2006, the McNairy County Historical Society worked to preserve their historical landmark. All of the neon tubing was gone, but it has received a fresh coat of paint and the base is fenced off.
Maxwell's Big Star and Luez theater - Bolivar, TN Apparently, Maxwell's Big Star was at one time a chain of grocery stores in and around west TN, but the location in Bolivar seems to be the only one still around. As for the Luez, A previous theater relocated to this spot in 1948 and has remained virtually unchanged ever since. The theater was originally managed by Louise Mask. She wanted a theater name that was only four letters long and picked Luez because of the similarity to her name.
Mckelvey's Flowers Used to be a neon sign. Seen along N. Military St. in Lawrenceburg, TN
CAFE neon sign Blues City Cafe - Beale St. Memphis The neon alternates between the three forks.
Smitty's Body & Glass neon sign at night Located in Parsons, TN along Main St. (US 412)
Roman Palace Hair Styling - Memphis, TN This neon sign is seen along Poplar Ave. (US 72) near the outskirts of town
World's First Coca-Cola Bottler Now, there's a neon sign that I bet has quite a history. I just don't know what that history is because I can't find anything about this particular sign online. There does appear to be several Coca-Cola bottlers with a similar styled sign, but only one is the World's First. The first Coke bottler did go by the name of "World's First Coca-Cola Bottler" and they were located in Market Street in downtown Chattanooga. They later expanded to a larger facility on Broad St. Then, in 1970, they moved to their current location, with their vintage neon sign out front, at 4000 Amnicola Highway.
Ride the INCLINE ...for a Panarama (sic) view of Chattanooga The Incline Railway is one of the big three toruist attractions on Lookout Mountain, along with Rock City and Ruby Falls. One of the primary roads to get up the mountain is the Lookout Mountain Scenic Highway, which has a bridge that crosses above the tracks. Right next to that bridge is a gift shop called Mountain Memories, and if you park there, you can walk along the sidewalk of that bridge and watch as one of the railcars goes by. (and of course, there's also this sign encouraging you to ride it for yourself.) On the day I was there, the tracks were under maintenance, so all I got to see was this sign.
Maxwell's Big Star - Bolivar, TN Apparently, Maxwell's Big Star was at one time a chain of grocery stores in and around west TN, but the location in Bolivar seems to be the only one still around.
Restaurant This neon sign is for a storefront along Main St. in the heart of Savannah, TN
Kennedy & Bowden Machine Co. neon sign This well preserved vintage neon sign used to advertise their business in downtown Nashville about where the batbuilding is today. The company relocated to the business park area of LaVergne, TN and took their sign with them.
The Log Cabin Restaurant neon sign - Frayser, TN Seen along highway US51 in Frayser, a subrub of Memphis to the north. The sign has seen better days, but they still look to be open.
Wiley T. Daniels neon sign - Ripley, TN I wish I knew who Wiley T. Daniles was or is, or the nature of the building with the namesake sign. This is located in Ripley, TN about a block off the town square along TN 209, which used to be US51. The large yellowish brick building had a bayed entrance which the sign is atop.
Beaman Motors NEW Neon Sign (2012) For decades, this sign was on Broadway (US 431/70S) in Nashville, with the vertical part reading Pontiac. The sign was taken down last March for several reasons. As they refurbished the sign, they updated it since they're more than just a Pontiac dealer now. They also wanted the sign to be visible from the interstate, so it has been newly positioned along another side of their property. The Beaman name is well known in Nashville. UPDATE: From the link that Agility Nut posted below, this is not the old sign, but a new sign made to look like the old one. The old on is now at the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati.
Paula & Raiford's Disco neon sign - downtown Memphis
Angelo's Food Basket - Frayser, TN Seen along US51 in this suburb north of Memphis. I would like to see what this looked like in its glory days, a large basket, with the bumps of food atop. I google's Angelo's Food Basket and the only result I got was someone who listed working there in the 70s on his public resume'. It looks like they were in business from 1967 to 1990. Today, the sign points people to Our Future Learing Center after-school program.
Frigidaire Neon Sign - Covington, TN There's a few interesting buildings just a couple blocks off of Covington's town square. Perhaps my favorite was this one which I suppose sells tools and appliances. In addition to the neon sign, there's a small octagonal window and two dark red stripes that run accross most of the top of the building.
Chaos 60 South - Downtown Memphis The neon sign for this establishment is along Front St. in downtown Memphis. While it looks like the sign is in the shape of a highway sign, there's no highway 60 around here. Instead, Chaos is the name of the place and it's located on 60 South Front St.
Lot-a-Burger sign Lot-A-Burger is a small chain of hamburger stands in the Memphis area where you used to be able to get "A Square Meal on a Round Bun." Apparently, this must have been a larger chain, but there seems to be only two of them now, including this one on N. Thomas St. (US51)
Royal Cafe neon sign - Whiteville, TN Seen along Main St. in the small central business area (Business US64)
Daytona Restaurant neon sign - Dayton, TN Air conditioned! So the sign is old enough that it dates back to the days when that was enough of a rarity to be pointed out on the signage. Located one block east of the town square.
Flying Fish Restaurant Neon Sign - Downtown Memphis Get your tails in here and enjoy the catfishplane
Fire Museum of Memphis Seen at sunrise when the sun was hitting the sign just right.
State Line Drive in Elizabethton, TN Along highway US19E/321 By my best guess, it's about 15 miles from the TN/NC state line
Masonic Lodge neon sign - Dyersburg, TN Seen along Business US51 north of the town square
Bailey Reed Motors neon sign Spring City, TN (Rhea County) along US 27.
Gateway Tire Neon Sign - Memphis Seen along Poplar Ave. (US72) in Memphis on a foggy morning
Selmer, TN Rexall Drugs Neon Sign I wonder if this sign at one time belonged to another city's Rexall and the Selmer store slapped their name on top. Seen along Main St. which is US 64 Business and US 43 Business.
Ray's Liquor Neon Sign - Newbern, TN
Plaza Food Center sign - South Dyersburg, TN Undoubtedly, this sign used to be for something else at this store. Seen along Business US51 (old TN3, now TN211)
Cherokee Motel sign - Chattanooga, TN The motel gets its name from being along Cherokee Blvd, which used to US27.
Chicken Chef sign - McMinnville, TN I first learned about Chicken Chef right before my first visit to McMinnville several years ago, but I didn't have a chance to stop there and check it out. From what I could tell, the place was so popular that more locations opened up, but the original spot was the only one popular enough to remain open. Reviewing restaurants isn't my thing, and I'm not much of a fried chicken eater either. Yet, when I'm on the road, I look for where the locals eat, and not the chains that I can find anywhere. It's a short order place, was filling, inexpensive, and they took a personal check, so all was fine with me. I really like the Chicken Chef logo, with the chicken as a chef, with it's chef hat, apron, skillet and tongs. ...so good it's habit forming. Update: Fast forward 10 years, and I learned I'm friends with the daughter of the family which runs this restaurant. It's a small world isn't it.
Laverne & Janet's Jewelry - Cookeville, TN This neon sign is for a jeweler's storefront located on Cookeville's town square.
Broken Neon Motel Sign - used to be Northside Motel Seen along Cherokee Blvd. (Old US27, now TN8) on the north side of Chattanooga.
Funtime Bowl Neon Sign Located on Commerce St, in Lewisburg, TN
Bristol VA / TENN sign (Daytime view) One of only 33 signs to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this landmark was built in 1910 to divide Tennessee and Virginia. In 1915, it was moved to its current location along State Street. In 1921, "A Good Place to Live" was added to the sign. The sign lights up at night. I suppose that's a sun or a starburst under the S in Bristol, plus the red arrows pointing to VA and TENN are chaser lights. This website is using this photo without permission: ustours.biz/carter-barter-music-tour/ Hello to anyone who found the photo here: www.atlasobscura.com/places/state-street
Rocket's Grille on a movie set One of my favorite places to eat is Karin's Kustard in Smyrna, TN. It's an old fashioned with great burgers and custard. Where else could I get Mello Yello mixed with lemon custard? Mmmmm. I drive by there most every day on the way to work and church. A couple of days ago Their sign said they'd be closed for a couple of days. Today as I drove by, I noticed a neon sign being put up and I wondered if the place was being remodeled. Then, tonight as I was driving home, from a distance I saw bright lights. As I drove past, I noticed something was being filmed. Since I had nothing better to do, I went home and got a camera so I could take a couple of pictures, with a night-time camera drive by. As I tried to drive by, A couple of cops came out to stop me. It turns out they were filming a couple of guys getting on a motorcycle and driving onto the street, when they didn't need me in the shot. I found some other people who also had nothing better to do who had set up lawn chairs across the street and were watching. I pulled up and asked if they knew what was up. They are filming Nicole Kidman's newest film Stoker. Karins is located next to some old train tracks, so in the next scene, they had a fake-but-lights-up-and-sounds-real train come through. The last time I saw a movie being filmed in Smyrna, they invited townsfolk to come by and be zombies in a horror film.
Park Theatre Neon Sign - McMinnville, TN This once thriving theater in downtown McMinnville, built in 1939, by Cowan Oldham, held 1,000 people, with one screen. This building was shut down in 1986, due to a contract with the Cumberland Amusement Company. The building is closed, but was bought out by a private group, and is currently being renovated to be a live entertainment center, and multi-use facility. The Theater is located along Main St., which is also old US70S (and TN1)
Hargrove Office Equipment neon sign This sign is on one of the older buildings that faces the Fountain Square in McMinnville, TN. It's tough to say how old this sign is, but if you look closely, you can tell where it's been repainted. For instance, where it says Equipment on the right, that has painted over "Adding Machines" which means the sign has to be at least 30 years old, or so.
Woodbury Funeral Home (Daytime) Most of my neon sign photos belong to Motels, cinemas, Restaurants, gift shops, drug stores and tourist traps. To me, it seems like a neon sign is out of place at a funeral home. However, I like neon signs and I can get over that kind of hang-up to photograph it in the day and the night time. (Seen along Main St. in Woodbury.)

Fire Hall Neon Sign - Harriman, TN It's not too often that I've seen the fire hall in the middle of town with an old neon sign. (Maybe it's because they're a fire hazard - oh, probably not.) This Fire Hall is located behind Temperance Hall in Harriman, TN
Mike's Cozy Inn - Winfield, TN This vintage neon sign is along US 27 on the Tennessee side of the TN/KY border
Blue Circle Market neon sign - Elizabethton, TN At one time, this was a neon sign for Blue Circle Hamburgers. That was a small chain of fast food restaurants around Northeast Tennessee, which made burgers similar to Krysals or White Castles, but apparently better. All of the stores in the chain closed decades ago, except for the one in Bristol, which just closed recently. This store after closing apparently turned into a market. It's located along US321 in Elizabethton, TN
Vintage Sprite sign at Jones Meat Processing! The upper half of the sign has very faded lettering, but it is for Jones Meat Processing. Nothing says you need to enjoy a cool and refreshing Sprite like a slaughterhouse! This sign and Jones Meat Processing is located on US64 in Franklin County, TN between Huntland and Belvidere.
Mac Auto Loans - Knoxville, TN Seen along US11/70
Lane Realty old neon sign Located in Murfreesboro, TN, the company now goes by Summar-Lane Realty. It may be the first realtors office I've seen with an old fashioned neon sign. Also, while the business is on Church Street, or highway US231, the sign is on the small side street for the back parking lot, where so fewer people would see it.
Kingsport Office Supply Company neon sign Located in downtown Kingsport, TN Here's where I see the irony in this photo - When this sign was new, it was designed to show an old fashioned quill pen and ink well. However, today this type of neon sign would be considered old fashioned. Today, much of the downtown area of Kingsport is a relic, with rows of abandoned storefronts. Today, the company here is known as Kingsport Imaging Systems, so I assume they focus on copiers
Pizza Palace - Knoxville, TN located along Magnolia Ave. (US11/US70/TN1) seen at dusk.
Athens diner neon sign - Athens, TN Seen along US11 Good Food Good Times
Downtown Grill & Brewery - Knoxville, TN Along Gay St.
Centerville, TN Masonic Lodge Neon Sign The white stone has etched on it when the building opened. It looks like 1851
JFG Coffee sign at night JFG Coffee was started in Knoxville in 1919. For many decades, they were located in several buildings in the Jackson Avenue Warehouse District, an area that today is known as Knoxville's Old City. The main factory building has a large JFG sign atop it. The sign has the company's slogan atop a steaming cup of coffee. The sign still lights up at nights, although many of the bulbs are out. JFG is now owned by Luzienne Tea and not located here anymore. this area is a popular spot for loft apartments and is today the JFG Flats.

Dotson's Restaurant US31 - Franklin, TN
Madison Bowling sign at Night Well, most of the neon works. Gallatin Pk. (US31E) in the Madison area of Nashville. 2016 Update: This property is now on the The Historic Nashville 2016 Nashville Nine: In the 1950s, the Crescent Amusement Company constructed three very similar bowling alleys in mid-century suburbs of Donelson, Inglewood, and Madison. Founded in Nashville around 1910 by Tony Sudekum (1879-1946), the Crescent Amusement Company operated movie theaters and other entertainment venues throughout Middle Tennessee, Kentucky, and Alabama. Locally, the company operated the famous Hippodrome and Tennessee Theater on Church Street. The Donelson bowling alley remains in operation and owned by Crescent, but the other two have been closed. All three feature distinctive Mid-Century Modern-style architectural elements on their facades and the Donelson and Madison buildings retain their original distinctive neon signs. Members of the community are concerned that these landmarks will be demolished as part of commercial redevelopment projects.
Lookout Mtn Tourist Lodge Located along the base of Lookout Mountain along the Will Cummings Highway (US 11/41/64/72). I'm guessing this was at one time one of the finer hotels in the area, but now is a little on the grimey side. Above the lettering on the sign is a horseback Indian cheif.
Glenwood Motel neon sign Another what looks to be out-of-business mom and pop motel along an old US Highway. This one is on the west side of Fayetteville along U.S. 64. Today, the entire motel has been removed.
Earl's Restaurant neon sign - Cleveland, TN Unfortunately, the sign for Earl's is behind a tree when looking from either side. Oh, well.
Gill's Furniture sign - Erin, TN
Mitchum Rexall Drugs neon sign Erin, TN
Sweetwater Valley Odd Fellows Neon Sign
Docks on the River Motel - Townsend, TN I drove up when the motel's owner was out mowing the yard. I waited until he was looking the other direction before I got out my camera to take a picture of the sign. I didn't want him to think I was weird for taking a photo of his motel sign without being an overnight guest. The motel is along the Lamar Alexander Pkwy and the "Little River"
Uncle Sam's Loan Office - Bristol, TN along State St.
Baggett Pharmacy - Kingston, TN Located along Race St. in the heart of town (US 70)
Vintage A&W Drive-In Neon sign - Erin, TN I can only assume that this used to be a chain of the A&W fast food restaurants which used to be one of the most prevalent chains in the 70's, and is still around today, but in smaller numbers. Today, this place is known as BJ's Family Diner. If you look just below the ice cream cone, you can see the faded A&W. When it ceased being an A&W, you can see that someone went to the trouble of removing the A&W neon tubing, but not repainting that area. Then they put in new neon tubing for solid lines. It makes you wonder why they went to the trouble. I'd like to see if the neon still works, although I suspect it doesn't if a light pole sticks out from it. There's neon tubing around the ice cream swirl at top, as well as the cone. Under the three lines is the red section with the white DRIVE IN with the letters and the shape of the arrow in neon. (apparently, BJs still operates as a drive in.) Finally, the last segment says in neon letters "GOOD FOOD" Seen in Erin, TN on the west side of town along Main St. (TN highway 49) UPDATE!!! Look at the comment below. The restaurant was really named for Archie & Wes, the two owners.
L&N Depot neon sign - Knoxville, TN The old L&N Station located at World's Fair Park in Downtown Knoxville doesn't service passenger trains anymore. However, the buiding is still in use for retail shops and the old neon sign still works
Glenwood Manor Located in Chattanoog at the intersection of the ramp that comes down from McCallie Ave. down to Glenwood Dr. (US11) The Glenwood Manor looks more like a boarding house than a motel, and probably isn't in business anymore.
Brownie's Restaurant - Athens, TN Along US11
JFG Coffee JFG Coffee was started in Knoxville in 1919. For many decades, they were located in several buildings in the Jackson Avenue Warehouse District, an area that today is known as Knoxville's Old City. Scenic Motel - Pigeon Forge This is a standard view of a vintage motel sign in the heavy tourist area of Pigeon Forge. I decided to upload this version, even though it can't compete with the way it looked one night at dusk in 2006, which flickr still says is my 2nd best photo in interestingness.

Carter Flooring Co. This neon sign is for a business between West End and Charlotte Ave.
Skyway Lanes sign US70 - New Johnsonville, TN
Southern Thrift Store neon sign I'n not sure what the blue part of the sign used to day in neon, but the rest of the sign still works. Seen along Charlotte Pk. (US70) in Nashville. Many years ago, this sign was for Allen and Bean Appliance Store as seen in this picture: www.facebook.com/MetroNashvilleArchives/photos/a.20911610... UPDATE: on my visit on 1/25/2014, the old sign was gone and replaced with a newer one.
Fox's Donut Den neon sign Norman Fox's Donut Den has been a popular place with the locals for a few decades with his store along Hillsboro Rd. This neon sign was newsworthy a few months ago. The property owners of the strip mall in Green Hills wanted to give their area a facelift, perhaps to make it look more upscale. they decided to remove the Popular Donut Den's 30ish year old sign. The public protested, and the property owners put it to a vote. By a wide margin the people decided the sign should stay.
Walter Nipper Sporting Goods neon sign Downtown Nashville - Jan, 2007 8th Ave. (US31/41/431) Recently, when I went through downtown, I noticed this sign had been taken down as Walter Nipper's has been closed for a little while. At the time I took the photo, I was never quite happy with it as most of the sign is in a shadow, but now I'll never get another chance to improve on it. Instead at the time, I uploaded a picture of just the Fish with Nashville on it. I suppose I feel like I'm in a hurry to find as many old time neon signs and Rock City Barns as you never know when they'll be gone.

Cumberland Truck Stop old neon sign This is an example of a business in a location that probably once thrived when this was an important highway, but is not very traveled today with the newer Interstate system. The old Cumberland Truck Stop is in Cumberland County just east of Crossville. Over the years, the highway has been known as the Memphis-to-Bristol Highway, TN1, Broadway of America and US70
Architecture of Morristown: Newspaper Wall Ad Daily - And Sinday! Gazette and Mail The Paper that Prints the Truth -All of it. I suppose at one time Morristown was big enough to have two papers that merged to become the Gasette and Mail. I do find it strange that "And Sunday" was painted over "Daily" which just seems to make things more confusing. The central Shopping District of Morristown has one thing that really stands out. If you go to any preserved old town, you're going to find in the heart of town, a bunch of old buildings with interesting storefronts and various older acrhitectural styles. In the late 1960s, Morristown decided they had a problem needing a unique solution. Town leaders decided to build second-story skywalks, which they called the SkyMart. The idea was you could double the number of businesses along the main strip, potentially doubling the number of shoppers that come to town. Did it work? If it had, you'd be seeing it in other small cities, and you won't see it anywhere other than Cincinnati, which is a big city where it didn't work. I don't know what's transpired over the last 40 years, but when I walked the skywalk, I didn't see any businesses I could shop in. On any given day, I suppose you could find walkers, locals getting to their upper floor apartments, and the occasional tourist. Even still, if you go to the Morristown website or find a Hamblen County brochure, this will be listed as a thing to see. Photographically, you can see things you won't see anywhere else, like getting up close to a ghost wall ad. On the down side, you can only get the top half of some of the more interesting buildings. For the full story, check out this document on the Morristown website: www.morristownchamber.com/documents/SkyMart.pdf

Mt. Gossett Bldg neon sign Just when I thought I had found every old neon sign in Nashville, there's another one. UPDATE: This building was listed on the Historic Nashville's "Nashville Nine" for the most endangered historic Places. According to their press release: This two-story commercial building on Church Street is a wonderful and unique example of mid-century commercial architecture in Nashville. According to tax records, M.T. Gossett Building was built around 1949 by Maurice Thomas "M.T." Gossett (1903-1996). Gossett was longtime president of a company that sold air conditioning, refrigeration, heating, and industrial supplies from this building. In 1931, Gossett invented and received a U.S. Patent for a flush valve repairing tool. The current owners purchased the now vacant building in 1997. Most people will remember it as the location of the Performance Studios Costumes a few years back. It retains an original neon sign with "M.T. Gossett Bldg." spelled out. There is also a sign on the building stating it is a “fallout shelter.” www.sitemason.com/files/h7umNW/HNI_NN_PR_Post_Final_FINAL...

Blue Circle Hamburgers Bristol, TN Blue Circle Hamburgers used to be a chain of 30 drive-in fast food in the area around Northeast Tennessee. Years later, this one location on the old Bluff City Highway is the only one still open and the old neon sign still stands since 1964. Ironically, Circleburgers are square, like a Krystal or White Castle, but many of the locals think it's so much better. I wish I could have stopped here, but I can only expect my wife to humor me so many times on one trip. www.gotricities.com/content/article.dna?idnumber=03052113....
Bristol VA / TENN sign One of only 33 signs to be listed on the National Registor of Historic Places, this landmark was built in 1910 to divide Tennessee and Virginia. In 1915, it was moved to its current location along State Street. In 1921, "A Good Place to Live" was added to the sign. I suppose that's a sun or a starburst under the S in Bristol, plus the red arrows pointing to VA and TENN are chaser lights.
Mrs. Grissom's neon sign at night At the top of the sign in a picture of a tub of Pimento Cheese Salad. If you've never heard of Mrs. Grissom's, they make that and chicken salad and tuna salad and not mixed greens tossed salad. "It's Just Over the Hill to Gilsville" The first time I saw this sign, I figured it was for some kind of family fun zone, a place parents could take their young children to climb the bubble-tubes and sink in the ball crawl. Of course those are modern establishments, and this sign is over 30 years old. It's located at a key intersection in Smyrna, the intersection of Sam Ridley Pkwy, Jefferson Pike. (TN266), and Nissan Dr. (TN 102), back in the 70s, the major road was Sam Davis Rd. and a billboard advertised the complex run by Sewart Air Force Base officer Gilbert Olerud, Jr. The complex started in the 50s as Gil's Supermarket, and then they added a full service garage / gas station and a Drive-in. Those became a mini market and a sit-down restaurant. When the Air Force Base closed, Gil helped to keep the area afloat with expansion and Gilsville was born. He added Gil's Hardware, a Radio Shack, a drug store and an appliance store. Gil died in 1980, but the Hardware Store is still there. The rest of today's occupants include a barber, a church, a dance studio, a hispanic bakery and the Rocking Chair Cafe.
Hatch Show Print Neon sign at dusk. Located in Downtown Nashville on Broadway. Hatch Show Print purchased this sign in 1948. Roy Acuff was the Republican Governor Candidate that year and he ordered so many posters from them that they had the money to purchase this sign. The longtime Nashville business moved to this location on Broadway in 1992. At the time, a city ordinance prohibited neon signs on Broadway, but having the classic sign put up was able to convince the local officials to change that policy and now there are many neon signs on Broadway

Winona Motel On the East side of Cookeville, TN on Highway U.S. 70N. I had about an hour wait at a restaurant, so I drove about 15 minutes each way to go take a picture of this sign and waste time. My favorite part of the sign are the pool waves at the top
Drake Hardware Plumbing Supplies Here's a neon sign that would have been great to see when it was working. The store had been out of business for many years. Nashville's skyline is in the background.
Ellington Motel - Lafayette, TN now the property appeared to be converted into apartments. The motel is at the corner of Church St. and Ellington Dr. I'm guessing that Ellington Dr. was named after Tennessee Gov. Buford Ellington. Does anyone know if Church St in Lafayette used to be highway TN52?
Last Chance Liquors East Nashville / Dickerson Pike. I'm guessing the "Last Chance" refers back to the days that Nashville was a dry city. Highway U.S. 431/41/31W part of town also known as Avondale Hello to anyone who found this photo here: hrfishbowl.com/2012/08/first-warning-should-be-the-last/ The First Warning Should be the Last
Weiss neon sign Main St. East Nashville (old U.S. 31E) I love how the sky looks here - not photoshopped. There were dark stormclouds in the sky, with the sun peaking through the clouds behind me to illuminate the sign If you didn't notice it, there is a neon drop coming out of the jug. The second drip is on the R and then a splat. Update: This sign appeard to have been severely damaged by the Mar. 3, 2020 tornado, as seen in this WTVF photo: ewscripps.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/96d9f75/2147483...
Swaney Swift Neon Sign Swaney Swift Drugstore - Gallatin, TN near the town square
Blues Jewelry sign Gallatin, TN near the town square Somewhere I once saw a sign a lot like this one. Could it be a chain?
Cream City Ice Cream One of the prettiest signs I've ever seen, and on my third visit to the old depot district of Cookeville, TN, the sign was lit up in all it's glory. I'd describe how the sign works, but it would be quicker to upload my video. Here's the Video I have given the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy permission to use this photo here: www.railstotrails.org/news/recurringFeatures/trailMonth/a...
Neon Cream City Ice Cream Part of the Cream City Ice Cream sign. The cherry on top moves. Right now, it's in the "up" position, but it also takes the outline of the red.
Cream City Ice Cream neon tub Cream City Deluxe Packed Ice Cream
Becker's Bakery Neon sign Cakes for special occasions! I had uploaded a picture of this sign before, but this time the neon is lit up Update: I drove by this on 8/16/13 and this neon sign was replaced with a modern plastic sign. I suppose most businesses try to keep their old fashioned signs up for as long as its feasible. I'm glad that at least I got it when I did.
Overton Motel Sign Livingston, TN I like the cactus flower bed.
J-J's Market On Broadway, Nashville, TN
old Beaman Pontiac sign along Broadway (U.S. 431 \ 70S)
Drake Motel - Stay Where the Stars Stay Quite possibly the neatest Motel sign in Nashville. (What took me so long to go over there to photograph it?) It's not in the best neighborhood anymore, on Murfreesboro Rd. Before the days of Interstates, this was in a heavily travelled area by tourists, U.S. 41 and U.S. 70S. It's doubtful that the stars stay here anymore, at least not since River Phoenix and Sandra Bullock in the 1993 unsuccessful movie "The Thing Called Love." Back in the day, it was the place for country music stars to stay (at least that's what my Mom told me the first time she drove me past it 20 years ago.) They even have a website: www.nashvilledirectory.com/drakeinn/
Crown Liquors sign U.S. 31 - Columbia, TN
Bucky's Family Restaurant Sundays Go Worship Then come eat here U.S. 31 Columbia, TN
R.C.May Jeweler Town square - Columbia, TN Update: now gone. It was in the corner where Pucketts is now located.
Holden Hardware - Murfreesboro, TN In the Murfreesboro, TN town square across from the courthouse on the west side. Holden Hardware has been there since at least the 50's.
Hickory Hill Motel & Cafe It looks like this place last had a paying customer about the time it was relevant for Motels to mention they had air conditioning. This is on the eastern side of Wilson County, east of Lebanon, TN along the Carthage Highway (U.S. 70N) which has long since been unused by most tourists as it parallels I-40.
The Basement Along 8th Ave. South (U.S. 31) across from the old Reservoir. It's one of the newer music venues in the city
Big B Cleaners Neon sign for Big B Cleaners drive-in service. Located on the town square in Murfreesboro, TN
Nashville Spring Service #1 621 8th Ave. South, across the street from the antique mall that I was always looking at while missing this sign. They've been there since 1943.
Nashville Spring Service #2 621 8th Ave. South,. They've been there since 1943. This sign is on Division St. What was I thinking by not taking a picture on the sunny side? Update: Where is this sign now? www.facebook.com/AmericanPickerMikeWolfe/photos/a.1167466...
Southern Thrift Store on Charlotte Pk. (U.S. 70) on the west side of Nashville UPDATE: on my visit on 1/25/2014, the old sign was gone and replaced with a newer one.
Wendell's neon sign at night
Wendell Smith's Restaurant sign Wendell's is a Meat-n-three along Charlotte Pk. (U.S. 70) in Nashville, TN. The daily menus are printed on a mimeograph. Best I could tell, drive-in service hasn't been available for a long time. the front half of the building is a liquor store.
Hermitage Liquors sign - Illuminated cloudy version Along Old Hickory Blvd. in Lakewood, TN.
Tip Thompson's Menswear - Shelbyville, TN The store looks like it had been there a long time. It also looks like although it is not out of business, it isn't open too often.
Blue Ribbon Inn - Shelbyville, TN Shelbyville is the home of the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration. (also is the home of lots of power lines, apparently)
Capri Theater The Capri Theater is in Shelbyville, TN about 1 block away from the Bedford County Courthouse. This theater is still in Operation, but was not open on the day I was there. Their neon sign lights up, but not this day.
Pope's Cafe - Air Conditioned - Shelbyville, TN I hear that they have the best food in the area. Unfortunately they were not open the day I was there, nor did they have their sign on. The sign does work, based on what I have seen from other flickr users.
Jack's Bar-b-que If I had the time and the patience, this sign would be a great animated gif
Putnam Drive-In Theater Located along Nashville Rd. (U.S. 70N) on the west side of Cookeville, TN in Putnam County. It has been closed for a few years.
Holden Hardware & Glidden At the Murfreesboro, TN town square
Driver's Cakes No. 1 in Lebanon
Cream City Ice Cream neon sign Cookeville, TN at the train Depot. I hear this sign still works and is turned on occasionally. I bet it looks great at night. The old manufacturing plant has turned into touristy, antique and specialty shops. Dinty Moore's Restaurant I think these are the people that sold the cans of beef stew. This sign is in the old business district in McMinnville, TN just a couple of blocks from the Warren County Courthouse. Dinty Moore's is out of business but the neat neon sign was left behind. The last occupant here was the Regal Begal restaurant but they too are gone.
Palace Theater - Crossville, TN
Hermitage Lanes On Lebanon Rd. (US 70) in the Hermiatge area of Nashville
Old Hickory Cleaners sign I love the sign but I cold never get a picture I was truly happy with. I could get a background of the trees or the dupont plant, and either way, there were power lines. But, I love the sign. Old Hickory, TN
Beckers Bakery Cakes for Special Occasions. I have several friends and family members that have fond memories of the cakes they got from here. Lebanon Rd. (U.S. 70) in the Donelson area of Nashville Update: I drove by this on 8/16/13 and this neon sign was replaced with a modern plastic sign. I suppose most businesses try to keep their old fashioned signs up for as long as its feasible. I'm glad that at least I got it when I did.
Donelson Bowl This photo has made explore, peaking at #384!

Animated Gif: Fox's Donut Den Check out the Animated version below! This is for anybody who is a fan of the popular Green Hills Donut place and their sign which has been there since 1977. I hated that there were so many power lines in the way, but you do what you can. For people familiar with the area, I am on the top floor of the Green Hills Mall Parking garage, zoomed in on the storefront. Hello to anyone who found this photo here: dbvt.com/blog/archive/2007/04/02/the-donut-den.aspx which I found linked to from here: weblogs.asp.net/communityblogs/archive/2007/04.aspx?PageI... and here: jaysonknight.com/feeds/archive/2007/04/02/the-donut-den.aspx and then here: kevinharder.com/telligenti/archive/2007/04/02/2981.aspx also, here: revscottie.wordpress.com/2009/05/31/hillsong-united-conce...
Testing a new telephoto lens: L&C tower logo the picture is underexposed a little bit to see the actual grills of the neon for the L and the C. My camera has a built it optical zoom of 10X, and I got a 1.5x telephoto added to it. so this is zoomed to 15x. Taken from across the river. L&C building trivia. Back in the days when this was the tallest skyscraper, they would change the color of the L&C lights as a weather status report.
WKDF sign and AmSouth Testing a new telephoto zoom lens on the WKDF sign on top of the Stahlman building in downtown nashville, with the Amsouth building logo in the background. The picture is a little underexposed to see the lines of the WKDF.

B.T. Faith Pianos This is the single rustiest and crustiest neon sign I think I've ever found. 911 Church St. Nashville, TN. Update: I don't know when the sign was removed but the entire block was torn down around 2020.
Nashville Sporting Goods The Nashville Fish sign of Walter Nipper's Sporting Goods store. If you didn't notice, the A in Nashville fell off and is stuck to the S, where I made a note. I saw a picture of this sign in a book printed in 2001 and the A was in the same place. Wild speculation....98 Tornado did it? Tennessee Electric Motor Company and there just has to be that one support wire going through the middle of it! The Company part is replacing an older word. According to their website, they've been around since 1936. Rewinding? Like what? VHS Tapes? Odometers? Sadly, this is another neon sign that is now gone, as the new Nashville convention center is going to be located where this building was. Loveless Cafe Neon Sign according to the brochure, Willard Scott and Martha Stewart think they have the country's best biscuits. For some reason, my wife and I weren't that impressed with them. UPDATE: The previous sentence was made after my first visit which must have been a bad night. We went again and they were great. If you've never heard of the Loveless Cafe, it's located just outside of Nashville in the small town of Pasquo, TN on state Highway 100 close to the northern end of the Natchez Trace Parkway.
