Welcome to Vega Mural - Route 66 Texas Route 66 runs through Vega, TX, the county seat of Oldham County. Vega has an East-West Main Street as well as a North-South Main Street (Also US385). This mural is at that intersection in the middle of town. As a roadgeek, it bothers me hos the highway shield is painted with interstate colors, which is a common mistake Route 66 has had a couple of alignments through Vega. The original alignment went along East-West Main Street. Then it came from East Main and turned down South Main Street. Then, the most prominent alignment went through the south side of town. If you drive Route 55 through Vega, make sure to go to the middle of town.
Gruhn Guitars mural - Nashville, TN located along 8th Ave. (US31) in Nashville's Waverly neighborhood.
Ayer's Pills Ghost Sign - Cairo, IL Cairo, IL is a fascinating city. A century ago, it was a thriving city at the southern end of Illinois where rivers meet. However, a large percentage of the population leaves every decade and eventually Cairo will be a ghost town. The town has fascinating and intricate architecture, but the few remaining citizens can't save everything. A few places are actively preserved, but many places are crumbling or have been torn down. The Ayer's Pills faded advertising mural is located in the area which used to be the thriving commercial district. However, 3 out of 4 buildings in this part of town have been removed and turned into vacant lots.

Frankie Pierce Mural - Nashville, TN This mural to local activist Frankie Pierce is in Nashville's new park near downtown which is also named after her. This is painted on the side of a retaining wall for where CSX tracks have a bridge over Nelson Merry St. The mural includes this quote: "We are optimistic because we have faith in the best of the country, of Nashville" - Frankie Pierce (May 1920) Here is the description of Frankie Pierce from a nearby marker: Juno Frankie (Seay) Pierce was born in Nashville near the end or just after the Civil War. Pierce was educated at the Joseph G. McKee Freedman School, the first free African American school in Nashville, and at Roger Williams College, one of four freedman's colleges in the city. She was a member of the nearby First Baptist Colored Church, now First Baptist Church, Capitol Hill. Frankie Pierce worked throughout her life for equality and human dignity, leading the creation of black branches of the YWCA and the Red Cross, and championing the Tennessee Federation of Colored Women's Clubs, the Negro Voters League and other civic groups. On May 18, 1920, Pierce was the only African American to address the state woman's suffrage convention. She presented a poignant defense of racial and gender equality, drawing on the common bonds formed by women's service organizations during World War One. On August 18, 1920, the 19th Amendment was ratified, giving American women the right to vote. African American women and other women of color were still often excluded from having full voting rights and were not fully enfranchised until the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Later, Pierce and the League of Women Voters successfully secured state funds to open the Tennessee Vocational School for Colored Girls in North Nashville, where she served as superintendent until 1939. Pierce remained an impactful activist and advocate until her death in 1954.
Mural: Covington County Timber and Logging The description is taken from the Andalusia website: cityofandalusia.com/community/historic-andalusia-murals.html This mural is located on the Cedar Creek Realty building, located on Church Street. Mural artist, Wes Hardin. The timber industry is equaled only by agriculture in its contribution to its early growth of Covington County. Though this mural gives the names of three: Henderson, Horseshoe, and Dixon, there were many other timber companies. The illustrations depict some operations of the early industry. On the right of the mural, two men are seen beside a large saw that was used, along with sharp axes, to fell the timber. In the background is a logging cart pulled by a team of oxen, used to drag the logs from the woods to the sawmill where they were squared and made into rafts to be floated down the Conecuh River, during the fall rains when the river was full. This was the primary method used to transport logs and lumber until the arrival of the railroads. In the background on the right side is commissary, a store maintained by the owners for the convenience of mill workers. The two gentlemen in front of the commissary are Solon and Charles Dixon. On the far right two workers are shown extracting turpentine rosin from a pine tree, the long-leaf pine being one of the main sources of this product. Henderson Lumber Company had two mills located in Sanford that were first owned by Mr. J.D. Henderson and a Mr. Flowers and a Mr. Garrett. Others who had a later interest in the mill were Mr. W.W. Vorn and George Orkney Waits. The mills located at Sanford could produce 150,000 feet of lumber each day. These mills depended on log trains for transport. They followed the swamps along Yellow River and Five Runs to bring timber to the mill. As did most of the large mills of that day it worked convicts. The Horseshoe Lumber Company, organized in 1898 By E.L. More was located on the banks of the Conecuh River at the horseshoe bend just east of the town of River Falls. More had a company doctor and clinic, and he set up a trust fund to benefit his longtime employees. The first mill at this location was burned in 1907. The second one was destroyed by fire in 1925, while the third one was washed away by the flood of March 14, 1929. At one time it required the services of some seven to nine hundred men to supply the 100,000 feet a day produced by the Horseshoe Mills. Napoleon B. Dixon began sawmill operations on Blue Creek in the 1880's. He was the first to use conservation measures when cutting the timber. Like their father, Dixon's sons Charles and Solon continued in timber as well as the turpentine business. Around 1940 they built a sawmill complete with a chipper and a planer. They continued to add to it and improve it until it was the largest and most modern mill in the area. Dixon Plywood, a division of Dixon Lumber Company was founded in 1970 and located in River Falls. In 1972 it had a payroll in excess of $1,700,000. Many communities of this area owed their existence to this giant industry. Lockhart, located about a mile west of Florala on Highway 55, came into being as a lumber town in 1891, when Jackson Lumber Company was incorporated to develop timber holding in Covington County. In the early 1900's the company was the largest producer of Long Leaf Yellow Pine Rift in the world. This lumber, manufactured by special machinery was considered superior. Many of the most notable buildings in Washington as well as New York and other areas had flooring made from Dixie Rift Flooring. Two of those buildings were the Library of Congress and the Grand Central Station. IN 1912, the mill employed around a thousand workers and was the largest lumber mill in the United States. Falco was another town spawned by a sawmill. Falco Sawmill and Planer Mill operated until they were totally destroyed by a tragic fire in 1924. Other companies were the Empire Lumber Company, Florala Sawmill Company, Simmons and Wilder that later sold to E.J. Hodge and Weant Lumber Company who sold to Henry Merrill and later Cook and McGowin operated the mill.

Temporary location for ATSF 999814 Caboose - Lebanon, TN This was an unexpected find on a recent visit through Lebanon. As I googled it, I found this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yRhQFGeays for the quick explanation: There's an upcoming music venue with a train theme nearby with an old building under refurbishment. They are going to purchase three cabooses to add to the property and this is the first. They are going to refurbish this caboose in this empty lot, then move it to the property to become a green room for musicians. The Venue is called the Freight Yard. thefreightyard.net/ also in the video. They will also get a flatbed train car to use as a pedestrian bridge to span a creek at this spot. There's also a nice steam train mural already on the inside. 999814 is a class CE-11 wide vision cupola caboose built for ATSF in 1981 by the International Car Company model M930. They were the last cabooses built for ATSF as cabooses were eliminated from their line 3 years later. 814 was last used by Alamo Gulf Coast Railroad.

May Hosiery Mills mural - Nashville, TN Because it's May Hosiery Quality! This mural was painted within the last year, so it's a new mural made to look like a faded old mural. This is at the former May Hosiery Mills building on Chestnut St. which was the largest employer in Nashville many decades ago. The sock company is no longer in business, and several new businesses have moved into these buildings. Along these lines, a lot of money has been spent on redeveloping this Wedgewood Houston neighborhood.
Uncovered Coca-Cola Mural - Bon Aqua, TN The old abandoned General Store along old highway TN46 in Bon Aqua was falling into disrepair when, in the 1960s the building was converted into a recording studio, and briefly owned by Johnny Cash. The building was abandoned again and fell into disrepair again. Understanding the building's history and potential. The building was purchased again. Today, this old general store has become the Storytellers Museum in Bon Aqua, TN. The same owners have purchased Johnny Cash's Hideaway Farm which is about five miles away. Around 2020, they looked to see what was underneath the metal siding (which was not original to the store) when they found the old Coca-Cola mural painted on the wooden beams. The word Drink is on the top left corner. DRINK COCA-COLA IN BOTTLES - TAKE HOME A CASE. The bottom left features a case of bottles.

Tupak Shakur Mural - Miami Beach, FL Mural appeared to be unsigned. Interesting stonework on the building as well, so I didn't crop it out.
Cookeville, TN Mural With Cookeville written in cursive, and the curved arrow at the bottom, this is reminiscent of the local landmark Cream City Ice Cream sign. This mural is around the corner from that sign on a building which previously was Coney Island Hot Dogs. I'm not sure why an airplane and mountains are here. Cookeville began as a city in 1903 when a charter was adopted.
Founders Square Murals - Hopkinsville, KY These Founders Square murals are located on the northwest corner of Ninth and Main streets in historic downtown Hopkinsville. It was a four-year painting project, which depicts the personalities, institutions, businesses, architecture, and other aspects of the community from 1800 to 1950. Murals of note: The rectangle in the middle is for famous Clairvoyant Edgar Cayce. His day job was as a Photographer. I presume Gordon Cayce was related, and ran an Antiques and imports business. The minor league baseball team Hopkinsville Hoppers is on the far right. I believe Class D was the lowest level of the minors and has been gone for decades. They played at Mercer Park and Kentucky Park from 1903-1954. Ned Turner is the inventor of the "Waist Suspenders" which must not be the same as regular Suspenders.
Covington (AL) County Seat Mural This mural is in Andalusia, AL, the County Seat of Covington County. It's located on the side of the Clark Theater which is next door to the County Courthouse. The Colony Hotel Lobby and painting - Miami Beach The Colony Hotel might be the most famous hotel in Miami Beach, in an area known for it historic hotel architecture. The lobby features a mural over the fireplace painted by Paul Simone in 1939. This hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Miami Beach Architectural District, also known as the Miami Art Deco District. This district has the world's best collection of Art Deco buildings in the world with hundreds of contributing properties in the district. This concentration of Art Deco motels was caused by the 1926 Great Miami Hurricane which destroyed many prior properties, plus the increasing popularity of the area as a tourist destination over the next 25 years. In particular, The Colony Hotel was one of the first, designed by Henry Hohauser in 1935. It's also in a prime location along Ocean Blvd. with Lummus Park and South Beach across the street. With the distinctive blue letters, several hotels in the area are often photographed together to demonstrate the area's varied and vibrant color at night. I usually don't post so may photos of one subject, but for once I decided to stay at an iconic hotel. Compared to other places in the area, it was surprisingly affordable. They had several bad reviews, but I believe most of them were before new ownership and a remodel. I would love to visit again someday.

Nashville Musician Mural - Frankie Pierce Park side A This mural was painted in August 2023 in Downtown Nashville's Frankie Pierce Park, which is home to several great murals. This mural is painted on the inside of an arch bridge with the painting completely covering the inside. The sun appears at the top, with six musicians on each side. (This was photographed with my cell phone's ultrawide camera.) The musicians are: (Help me if I'm wrong on these.) Martina McBride, Minnie Pearl, Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, Ernest Tubb, Tina Turner. Here's the artist's view: www.instagram.com/p/CwP7aE0uVG8/?hl=en More details on the bridge: It was built by L&N railroad (today CSX) in 1925 for one track to cross over Gay Street. It is a closed spandrel arch bridge with 5 concrete arches. There are beams which run between the arches which create the horizontal lines in the picture. I'm not sure what the beams are made of. The railroad tracks form a Y here at the end of the gulch, so there are two train bridges near each other for three consecutive streets. Although it's downtown, it's corporately undevelopable space so turning it into a park was a great idea. While the parallel streets (Nelson Merry and Josephine Holloway (aka Jo Johnston)) are open to traffic, Gay St. is now closed to traffic here, and is instead part of Nashville's Gulch Greenway.

Faded Mural - Cumberlad Gap, TN I can't be certain, but that looks like it has the Bunny Bread logo on the left. To the right of that, the middle line appears to have the word Kitchen. This mural faces a small park on Colwyn St. The building it is on is today Angelos in the Gap, but previously a hardware and supply store.
Creature of Sugar Flat Road mural I like this mural, partially because it reminds me of the first time I went viral on the internet. In 2007, the head of the Creature of Sugar Flat Road appeared in the window of Cuz's Antique Store on the town square in Lebanon, TN. See my picture here: flic.kr/p/2kcCt6 Supposedly, this was the remains of a Cryptid hit by a car in 1989. It's obviously fake, but made for a fun story. I posted my photo to Flickr in my early days on the platform, and then shared the photo to my blog. A couple months later, the radio program "Coast to Coast A.M." had a segment on this and linked to my blog. The comments left behind are great. Not long after, the Antique store went out of business. The head was purchased by a curiosity shop in Chattanooga. A few years later, they are also out of business and I have not learned of the current whereabouts (assuming it's still intact). I haven't thought about this in years when I was delighted to find this mural at the Chattanooga Choo Choo. Artist Catlant painted this in 2016. It is painted in the style of the posters for the touring Freak shows. Alive! I visited the Chattanooga Choo Choo late in 2022 about the time they were removing the worn down train cars. This provided a nice long distant view of this painting, other than the caution tape which runs across.
FAILE's Around the Corner mural - Covington, KY FAILE is an artistic duo of collage-style pop culture designers. In October 2014, they unveiled a series of paintings around Covington. (The others are across the street but visible from this spot.) this view is comprised of "Werewolves of Covington" on the left, "Members Only" on the right, and "Need for Speed" below. Sparta Tennessee Home This mural by ExploreSparta.com is located in the middle of town along Bockman Way (US70). I like how the top half of the guitar is made to look like a scenic road through the hills.
Fashion Frocks mural This modern-with-a-retro-design mural for Cincinnati Made Fashion Frocks is located outside the American Sign Museum. It's fashion-wise to be thrifty - since 1908.
Ghost Signs - Ellijay, GA The right side is easier to understand with Snowdrift in large letters. Snowdrift made shortening and based on other murals I've seen the line below used to read Perfect Bread, Pastry, Cakes. Of course, someone knocked out and then filled back in part of the wall. The left side advertised Ray's Billiards and Eats.
Never Forget Mural - Nashville, TN This September 11 mural was painted by Michael Cooper of Murals & More in May 2019. It faces Cleveland Ave but is visible from Murfreesboro Pk. (US41). It's also practically across the street from the Metro Police Dept. HQ. Google Street View for this shows it being worked on. www.google.com/maps/@36.1416006,-86.7418044,3a,75y,99.68h...
Faded Coca-Cola wall ad - Decatur, AL This wall has multiple ads, but the one for Coca-Cola is the easiest to see. Later, a tall window cut out the O in COLA. Above that is DRINK. To the left id Delicious & Refreshing. On the top left is yellow letters, but all I can read is SLOA. More is on the right of Coca-Cola and I might see the word RELIEVE.
You said we couldn't do it but, we did This Route 66 mural is located in Tulsa near the iconic Meadow Gold sign. The mural is signed by Josh Butts in 2018. The man with the car plus the bridge structure in the background is part of Cyrus Avery Plaza highlighting his importance in developing Route 66. Drink Coca-Cola mural - Stroud, OK The restored Drink Coca-Cola mural is located along Route 66 in downtown Stroud, OK. According to the white box on the left, this was restored by Palmer Ackerman in April 2020. In the box above it, it once was previously restored by the Stroud Library Society, but a while ago where the date isn't visible.
Greetings from Tulsa, OK mural I like the look of the mural, styled like a linen era big letter post card. I first spotted this mural along Interstate 244, but it's much easier to see when driving along N. Lewis Ave where it crosses I-244. It's painted on the side of Ziegler Art Supplies. This part of town is the Kendall Whittier District as noted on the bottom right.
Tom Sawyer Murals These are two murals depicting scenes from Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer and life on the Mississippi River. These are located at Mud Island at Memphis as part of the Mississippi River Museum. The artist appears to be ET or EF Blalack.
Greetings from Galena on Historic Route 66 I really like this mural with many nice touches. Most of the mural features the intersection and turn in front of Cars on the Route, a vintage Kan-O-Tex service station. In front of this is Tow Tater, the real tow truck inspiration for Tow Mater in Pixar's Cars. The Sheriff is on the other side. To the left is the Murder Bordello house. On the right is the faded wall ad for the Palace Drug Store. The tire tracks of the blue car make the name of famed Route 66 historian Michael Wallis. Of the two insets, the left is the town's MKT Train Depot. To the left of the mural is a Kansas state highway 66 sign. While the older Route 66 alignment goes by Cars on the Route, the later alignment of Route 66 is now signed as Kansas 66. The two alignments meet at the intersection where the mural is located. In the top left corner is a sign designating this as Kansas Bike Trail 66 as well. Photos of these highlighted spots will be placed in the comments.
Catch that Pepsi Spirit along Route 66 This mural for Buck's Recreation is along Route 66 in Galena, KS.
Love from Metropolis mural Metropolis, IL, the home of Superman, is located at the bottom of the state.
1910 in Metropolis Mural This mural in Metropolis, IL was painted in 2001 by Becky Gregory as part of the Ohio River Scenic Byway and America's Byways Mural Project. The description of the mural describes how in 1910, one would hitch up the horse to a post along ferry street to meet friends, catch up on gossip and buy eggs. After multiple floods, the central business district in town moved further away from the river and onto Market Street.
Welcome to Historic Washington, GA This is Mural #2 of the John W. Christian Studios Georgia Arts Mural Trail featuring highlights of the city of Washington and Wilkes County. The prominently featured house is the Campbell-Jordan house. The brick building on the right is the Mary Willis Library. The church on the left might be the 1826 Presbyterian church. The coins in the top left represent the confederate treasury which was stored in town. Among the commercial district storefronts at the top is the Fitzpatrick Hotel.
The Crosley Empire mural WLW Radio - The Nation's Station The Crosley Empire - Pioneers of Radio - Powel Crosley, Jr. - Lewis Crosley Home of CROSLEY Radio Corp. - Camp Washington - Cincinnati Ohio Crosley - A Fine Car. This mural is located in the parking lot of the American Sign Museum in the Camp Washington area of Cincinnati. Powel Crosley Jr. owned WLW and the broadcast building in the mural is the Crosley Building, which became the most powerful station in the world. He also purchased the Cincinnati Reds. Their stadium became Crosley Field. WLW became the first radio station to regularly broadcast baseball play-by-play. And he ran a major car company as well.

Cookeville Proud Mural Located on the side of the Cookeville History Museum, which is located on Broad St. between the courthouse square and the Cream City Depot District.
Greetings From Woodbury, TN Mural This postcard-esque mural is located on the side of Iron Pig Antiques. This business is on the East side of the Woodbury town square and this mural faces highway US70S (also TN1). The mural features a pig in the back of a 1940s pickup truck in front of the Cannon County Courthouse.
Ford Ghost Mural - Cookeville, TN I wonder if this was once a Ford dealership several decades ago. The building is along Broad St. (Old US70N) in Cookeville between the depot district and the courthouse square. It's not hard to see from the street, but there's a newer section closer to the road. It faces an old gravel driveway. I think there are also faded words in the white stripe along the top. The Smile graffiti has also been there since at least 2013 when the oldest Google Street View shows the area.
Building a Better Future This advertising mural faces the parking lot for the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati. Google tells me that Nextgen Building Supply is the name of the business next door which this is painted on, or at least it used to be. The mural features Cincy landmarks like a couple of prominent downtown buildings or the Roebling Suspension Bridge.
Tracy City Mural This mural highlights many historical features of the area, including: Steam Locomotive #49 and the Tracy City Depot. The tracks and depot are now gone but trains were important to the city. The site on an old roundabout has been recently turned into a city park. Hiking. The trial on the left points to Fiery Gizzard and on the right is Foster Falls. Dutch Maid Bakery is still in business across the street from here. The Lone Rock Coke Ovens are at the very top. Also included is Grundy County High School, Flury's Fancy Groceries, The New York Store, Grundy Bank & Annex, and the gazebo at the Mini Park nearby.
Yorke Men's Shop wall ad - Nashville If it's new If it's sharp We have it! This hand-painted wall advertisement is located inside the Arcade in downtown Nashville. Also, I don't have any information on it. Please let me know if you do have info about it. in 2019, this was a solid white wall, just like the area on the right. I'd like to think this isn't a new mural made to look like an old mural; but if that's what someone did, it has convinced me. However, if someone was able to peel white paint off of another layer of paint, that doesn't seem easy. I can't find any record of a Yorke Men's Shop past or present at the Arcade. I also can't find any news stories regarding "look what we found when we peeled back some paint" or "look what we just made." Perhaps it is signed, but there are a couple of cars right up against it and the no parking sign.
Multiple Ghost Signs - Hattiesburg, MS This abandoned business is located along E. Pine St., where US11 travels east from downtown Hattiesburg. Along the top is the name ouf the business, which includes Auto Machine Co. Along the front in green squares are the names of auto part manufacturers the mechanic used. In all of this, I think I also see more than two layers of Royal Crown Cola ads.
Ice Cream Parlor Mural - Andalusia, AL One of many murals in downtown Andalusia.
Historic Bell Buckle TN Elements of this mural include an RC Cole and Moon Pie, since Bell Buckle is home to the RC Cola and Moon Pie Festival, Some of the store fronts and the quilt design painted on the parking lot, a Red Barn, and an L&N Caboose. I first saw this mural about 15 years ago, but that alley in there is quite narrow. Now I have a wide angle lens where I can get the whole mural in one picture.
Early School Days of Covington County This is one of many murals in downtown Andalusia, AL. It's on a building owned by Dairy Queen, which is why a throwback logo is painted in the corner. The mural appears to be a montage of old photographs including old schools.
Faded Wall ads - Hattiesburg, MS It looks like this ghost sign has been painted multiple times. I think the easiest part to read is on the left where I see Smoking and "Standard of the World." I believe this is a Bull Durham Tobacco ad. On the right, I see "Shoes." At one time, I suspect this building was taller and we only see the lower portion now.
Patriotic Mural - Portland, TN This mural in downtown Portland, TN was painted by Manuel Fuentes @usa_pro_art. The mural features a flag with a blue line, a marine, tank and helicopter, Firefighter, firetruck and EMS logo, and the Liberty Bell.
Jackson, TN Depot Mural This mural is in Jackson, TN about a block away from the historic NCStL Passenger Depot. It is signed by "Murals by Les." From this spot, if you turned around, perhaps this is what you would see 100 years ago. The depot is central in the mural, with steam locomotive NCStL #535 getting a water tank refill and ready to pull a couple of passenger cars. On the left is a streetcar travelling down Royal St. In the background, we see the Electo-Chalybeate Well and the Lancaster Park Zoo (now gone). Around the corner, this side of the building faces the Neely House and has a mural depicting this former boarding house.
Modern Repainted Coca-Cola Mural - East Nashville Located at the corner of Shelby Ave and 17th St., this building was originally the home of S.W. Simpkins Grocery Store. About 15 years ago, the store was abandoned and falling into disrepair. Around 2010, the building underwent a refurbishment. The long-gone Coca Cola mural on the side of the building was also repainted about 2015 to look as it did in the past. As of 2018, the building is now home to Shelby Ave. Bicycle Co.
Gallatin Trains and Trolleys mural This mural from Bryan Deese is just a couple of blocks off the Gallatin town square. in his words: At the start of the 20th century few small towns in America had a transportation infrastructure equal to what could be found in Gallatin. With a passenger train service from the Louisville & Nashville Rail Road that opened in 1858 residents were able to board at Depot Square and travel anywhere in the United States. Locally, shorter trips could be taken on the Nashville Light & Railway's Nashville-Gallatin Interurban RR (trolley) from Main Street and Water Street all the way to downtown Nashville. Gallatin merchants, farmers and manufactures benefited greatly from these railroads, shipping and receiving goods daily on the freight services offered by each company. These transport options were vital to Gallatin’s growth and development during the 19th and 20th centuries. Continue reading here: www.gallatintn.gov/1901/Downtown-Murals

Anchor Grill Riverboat Mural - Covington, KY Two years ago, I stopped here to see their vintage and still operational Chicago Coin Band Box: flic.kr/p/2joFnMS My wife and I enjoyed breakfast here, although another person while we were there stopped in just to photograph it and then left. If they are going to maintain the Band Box, I suppose the least we could do is buy a meal there. Since I'm from out of state, I ordered a Cincinnati food I can't get back home, Goetta omelet. This restaurant is located in Covington, KY at the intersection of Pike St. and Main St, or where US25 turns to cross the Ohio river. Cincinnati is known for it's riverboat history, which is the theme of the mural.

Gallatin Vs. Union Mural - Gallatin, TN This new mural from Bryan Drese is located in Gallatin. The full significance of this game can be read at this link: www.gallatintn.gov/1901/Downtown-Murals Here's an excerpt: The teams’ two captains Eddie Sherlin (Gallatin) and Bill Ligon had been friends since early childhood. For some Gallatin residents the game symbolized long racial struggles held for generations. For many, however, the game symbolized a new way forward. This was especially true with the two friends who played against each other that night. After the game they embraced on court. Both players went on to receive all tournament awards. Note: I took the photo at an awkward angle because of a car parked in front of it.
Laurel & Hardy Florist Mural - Harlem, GA Oliver Hardy was from Harlem, GA and is commemorated all around town, In this view, the mural faces the train tracks in town. Furniture Store Ghost Sign - Nashville, TN Here is a faded ghost mural advertisement in Nashville. I got this view from inside Nashville City Cemetery in the back by the train tracks. Since this faces the tracks, I suppose the target audience for this were people who rode passenger trains. The building it is painted on appears to be R&B Cycles at Oak St. & 6th St. "Bros." is the easiest part of the sign to read. The line below it probably says FURNITURE but it's faded and covered in graffiti. As far as the family name of the business, I can only guess. The last letter K is obvious. The first letter probably has replaced bricks. In between, might be an OL, so maybe it's Polk Bros., but that's only a guess.
Don's Paint & Body Shop + Sprite Mural Located at 660 Union Ave. (US51/64/70/79) in Memphis. This photo was taken in 2015. Looking at it in Google Street View, the Sprite mural was covered by graffiti in the past year.
Cincinnati Avenue Grounds Baseball mural This modern mural is located on the grounds of the parking lot at the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati. It is the baseball stadium where the Cincinnati Reds played in 1876. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avenue_Grounds The best I can tell, all of the various alcoholic beverages listed on the left are made up.
Gen. George Thomas' Troops Marched through Campbellsville This mural in downtown Campbellsville, KY is unlabeled, so I hope the description from a nearby historic marker is relevant to this image. In Jan. 1862, two brigades of Brig. General George Thomas' men, numbering at least 5000, marched from Lebanon through Campbellsville on their way to Mill Springs where they defeated Rebel General Felix Zollicoffer's troops.
Restored Drink Chero-Cola Mural - Louisville, GA This restored mural faces the county courthouse in Louisville, GA
Restored wall ads - Meridian, MS This restored wall mural is located in Meridian, MS along First St. at the Union Hotel building. Union Hotel was a railroad hotel serving passengers of the train station across the street. Who remembers when hotels cost $1? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think European means amenities such as meals are not included in the price. The mural also features Uneeda Biscuit from National Biscuit Company (which became Nabisco.) Also featured is Wrigley's Spearmint Pepsin Gum When I look on Google Street View, the ads were restored before 2008, but Visit Meridian was added circa 2017.
Thunderbird Inn postcard mural - Savannah, GA This mural was made in the design of old photo letter postcards: In each letter, we have: S: Tree-lined drive to Wormsloe Plantation A: Gold-domed City Hall V: William Jasper Monument at Madison Square AN: Forsyth Park Fountain N: Cathedral of St. John the Baptist A: William Gordon Monument at Wright Square H: Cotton Exchange. The Thunderbird Inn in Savannah is a retro hotel with many features which remind you what a hotel stay was like in the 1960s. The hotel still has it's original neon sign and exterior, and the rooms feature throwback lighting and furnishings. My wife and I recently had a chance to spend the night. Wedding of Hank and Audrey Williams Mural - Andalusia, AL Hank Williams was 19 years old in 1943 when he began dating Audrey Sheppard who played stand-up bass in his band. They were in Andalusia on Dec. 15, 1944 when Hank was having car trouble. They stopped at an auto garage owned by John G. Wright, Sr. one block east of the town square (E. 3 Notch St. @ Central St.). In the auto garage, they were married by Justice of the Peace M.A. Boyett that day. Many decades later, artist Wes Hardin painted this mural to commemorate the event on the side of the same building which used to be Wright's Auto Service.
Mountain Dew: Born in Tennessee Mural For someone who loves Tennessee and Mountain Dew, this is a great mural. The mural features a billboard with the early slogan "It'll tickle your innards" and a painted barn with the Tennessee original. Other Tennessee sights depicted here are the Memphis Pyramid, Nashville Batbuilding and the Knoxville Sunsphere. This mural is located in East Nashville near the Five Points area at the intersection of Woodland St. and 10th St., which used to be a Family Dollar. Posted on 12/15/2017 Side two of the Columbia Public Mural Project depicting a beloved mule, iconic of Columbia’s nickname “Muletown”, has been completed. Atlanta-based artist Michael Colley signed his name to the wall, marking the end of his work on the two-sided mural in Columbia, Tennessee. “It's not often in a career, someone is asked to design not one, but two ideas that represent an entire city,” said Michael Colley. “They (the city) wanted to establish a larger presence in the community for the Arts and these two walls were to be a flagship for that endeavor. The fire station mural was side one. The mural for side two needed to light up the new and growing Arts District in Columbia, so I picked Cubism for the style, made famous by Picasso. I feel honored to have been part of the city’s art movement and only hope it continues to grow and grow. I look forward to returning to Columbia in the near future to help in any way possible”. There's Only One Cookeville This August 2016 Mural is located in the Cream City Depot District on the other side of the building that has the 2015 restored Coca-Cola Mural. That business with there murals is owned by Cookeville Mayor Ricky Shelton who comments that there really is only one Cookeville. "Out of 19,354 incorporated cities across the U.S, there’s only one city named Cookeville and it’s right here in Putnam County." This mural even has a website which hopes to sell T-Shirts someday: theresonlyonecookeville.com/ Originally, In July 2016 the mural said "I Believe in Cookeville" but was deemed too similar to the I Believe in Nashville murals, and was changed to something unique.

Restored Coca-Cola Mural - Cookeville, TN In 2015, a store owner in the Cream City Depot District in Cookeville was renovating the exterior of his building. On Sept. 4, 2015, the city unveiled the restored mural with the 'Silhouette girl.' Full story: herald-citizen.com/stories/historic-coke-sign-unveiling-i...?
Restored Purity wall ad - Smyrna, TN For those of you who don't live near Nashville, Purity Dairies is the perhaps the most popular brand of milk and ice cream in the area. (Their ads also launched the career of Jim Varney as Ernest.) It's on the side of a building in the small downtown area of Smyrna, TN. I think the building was the Regal Theater from 1910-1958. After that, it was the Theater Grill. This 50's mural was renovated in Sept. 2016. Learn more about the project in this Daily News Journal article: www.dnj.com/story/news/2016/09/24/refurbished-purity-dair... Highlights of the article include how Purity was consulted to find the original paint color, and how the local Carpe Artista worked with the Nashville Walls Project. Three paintings - Decatur, TN These murals are on the side of the Meigs County Bank on the Decatur town square, where this a small park. All three are dated June 2014, by Bill McDonald and the tag line "God's the artist...I just hold the brush" I am going to guess at the depiction: The one on the left in a 1920's scene on the Tennessee river from a dock. On the right is the steamboat Joe Wheeler on the Tennessee River. In the center is a 50s image of a meeting house of some kind.

Edgar Cayce - Quality Photographs Edgar Cayce is a famous Clairvoyant from the early 20th century who grew up in Hopkinsville, KY. I suppose he must have run a photography business as well, but I didn't know that about him. In downtown Hopkinsville, along a large brick wall are several retro murals. I first learned of Cayce when I bought a 1950s biography of him when our school had its yearly book clearance sale.
Drink Coca-Cola in Bottles - Engel Stadium Dating back to the early 1930s, Engel Stadium is the historic stadium and longtime home of the Chattanooga Lookouts. (Today, it is the home stadium of UT-Chattanooga. At one time, it was the home of the state TSSAA baseball playoffs.) You can tell it is an old-timey stadium with the way the outfield slopes and the flagpole is in play I love the hand-painted Coca-Cola mural on the outfield wall. The mural is larger than it looks - check out the ladder in the bottom left corner of the image. The actual center field wall is the dark green wall on the right, but the coke mural is further from home plate and tougher to hit a home run over. Somewhere, I once heard it is 490 feet over the "In Bottles" and it looks like it's 20 feet tall. I can't find my source for this, but somewhere I read the only person to ever hit a home run over the sign was all-time great Harmon Killibrew

Faded Sign - Drug store / Sealtest / Coca-Cola This is located in Chattanooga along Central Ave at 8th Ave on a boarded up old business. In small letters, DRINK is above COCA-COLA but is mostly covered by the Sealtest part. Who knows which one is older.
Faded Rock City mural This faded Rock City painted advertisment is one of those things I drove past many times before I made sure I could stop and photograph it. There are a couple of other faded ads along this stretch of Broad St. so I also was never quite sure my memory wasn't playing tricks on me. Sadly, this ad is so faded I can't really see what else it says. The mural is along Broad Street which is the old main road between downtown Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain, so many people would have past this sign on the way there.
Faded Ad Mural - Lexington, TN This is seen along Church St (US412) across the street from the county courthouse in Lexington. The mural features ads for multiple things. Princess Theater, which is on the other side of the square Double Cola - Grapette Sloans Linament Plus a couple of more faded or painted over sections for Grove's and Bluebird. Then, there's also a large painting of an old car and a driver that now looks headless. This mural is on the side of a building that used to be Stanford-Hatchett Livery
Faded Coca-Cola Mural - Clarksville, TN This faded ad in downtown Clarksville is located on the side of a building on 1st street facing the newer City Hall, with Strawberry Alley as the side street. The space has been multiple ads over the years and the fading paint has rendered almost all of the words unreadable. In Larger letters, I also see a CA which makes me think there used to also be a Wine of Cardui ad here as well.
Jackson, TN Rock-a-Billy Stage Since Jackson is home to the International Rock-a-Billy Hall of Fame, this small park has a stage and the Rock-a-Billy Mural. The backdrop of the stage includes an oversized Sun Records 45 and the message "Happy Birthday Carl (Perkins)! Also there's a note: "Help support the construction of Jackson's Largest Outdoor dance floor."

faded Coca-Cola Mural / Pickett's Grocery - Whitwell, TN
The Ghost Mural - Knoxville, TN Located along the side of the McClung building is a mural easily visible from Interstate 40. There are two things painted along the side of this old warehouse near downtown, and we'll start with the less interesting part. Philco. Your better buy. Color TV, VCR & Audio. When I hear the name Philco, I think about the 1930's radio owned by my grandfather and passed down through the family. I don't know what became of Philco over the years, but this wall ad for a nearby store that sells VCRs is estimated to date back to 1986-ish. Since it's ben over 25 years, what's underneath is starting to show. Something Groovy is underneath the ad and whatever it is, it's a shame you can't see it anymore. The artwork was comissioned by the World's Fair in 1982. Completed in 1981, it was apparently inspired by the artwork of Peter Max and painted by a UT Professor and student. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a vintage pre-philco view of the mural. However, For the full story, read this recent article from Metro Pulse Magazine: www.metropulse.com/news/2013/jun/26/ghost-mural-strange-i...
George T. Hitch Jeweler - Roanoke, VA This building in downtown Roanoke was built in 1904 in a Renaissance Style. As the fading hand-painted mural suggests, it was a jewelry store owned by George T. Hitch. The 118 is for the store's address along Campbell St. The building sat vacant for years until it was daved with a grant from the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. Today, the building is used as a downtown bed and breakfast called The Inn on Campbell. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register.
Railroad Mural - Paris, TN This mural depicts an Orange and Yellow locomotive pulling a brown caboose which is chased by a couple of anthropomorphic dogs with their pizza and beer. If you'r wondering why there'd be pizza and beer in this mural, it must have been commissioned by a local pizza place. The name PAPA J (not Papa Johns) was painted on the train, and then painted over in a different shade of orange. In Paris, the railroad went right down the middle of Fentress St. and is seen along the street in this picture. The 1896 NCStL depot is just down the street a couple of blocks.
Pepsi-Cola Hits the Spot mural This faded Enjoy Pepsi-Cola advertisement mural is located on the side of a brick building a couple of blocks south of the town square in Brownsville, TN. My dad would tell me how when he was growing up, the Pepsi jingle was "Pepsi-Cola hits the spot. Twelve full ounces, that's a lot!" Although I can't make out the first word, there's also an ad for something above it that ends in Jungle.
Nuckolls Drug Mural - Hillsville, VA In Hillsville, there are many vintage storefronts along Main St. This mural is located along the back side of those buildings in the parking area.
Rockabilly Highway Mural - Selmer, TN This 20 foot tall by 120 foot wide painting on the side of a business in the middle of Selmer's central business district was the creation of artist Brian Tull in the first half of 2009. A stretch of Highway US45 running from Interstate 40 in Jackson down to the Mississippi state line was given the designation Rockabilly Highway in the summer of 2008. The painting depicts a couple of musicians (based on Phil Hummer & The White Falcons) performing at the WSM microphone at the Grand Ole Opry. In the Summer of 2012, a second Mural was added a few buildings down, but I haven't been back to town yet to see it.
Pulaski, VA Mural Scenes include the Pulaski Theater Marquee, the Historic County Courthouse clock tower and a Norfolk Southern Caboose. It is located on S. Washington Ave. (US11)
Railroad Mural - Corbin, KY This mural featuring an L&N Steam Train arriving at the station is seen at the passenger depot in Corbin, painted on a long brick wall next to the depot. It was painted by Queen of Arts LLC out of Lexington
Faded Coca-Cola Mural - Bristol, TN Seen along State Street in the historic downtown area, the old mural is difficult to see with newer buildings obstructing the view
Coke & Storkland Baby Furniture murals Seen when driving around downtown Birmingham... I'm someone who likes to take lots of pictures of Coca-Cola murals, but what sets this one apart is the inclusion of Storkland Baby Furniture. I like that name. They, along with Coke, appear to still be in business. Layettes, Linen(?) Baby Gifts & Toys. (I just learned that "Layettes" is a word.)
The Hours Passed - The Picture Stayed In the "They Don't Make Them like they used to" category, I submit this vintage and restored wall mural for a Television manufacturer seen in downtown Birmingham. "The Hours Passed - The Picture Stayed" By that line, I guess that other TVs got fuzzy the longer you left them on. The next thing I noticed about this mural is everyone is depicted wearing their nice formal wear. I suppose that having the chance to watch one of those newfangled moving pictures in the comfort of your own home was worth dressing up for. Then, you invite your neighbors and serve wine.
Mist on the Holston River @ Bluff City, TN Bluff City is a town that went through multiple name changes but dates back to 1780 when the Overmountain Men crossed the Holston River here at Choate's Ford. The remains of a railroad bridge can also be seen here, with a stone pier and an abutment with a mural painted on it. Today, this section of the river is also known as Boone Lake. Downtown Pensacola Fire Hall Mural The mural is signed by Fred Neveu 2008.
Downtown Roanoke / Coca-Cola Mural The long mural with multiple advertisements also features Mutual of New York and Caveness & Conner Insurance. The painter of the mural signed it in the bottom corner, but I didn't get a better picture of it. Originally, I assumed this was a vintage restored mural, but now I'm guessing it's probably from the 80's but with a vintage look.
Kickapoo Joy Juice faded wall ad This is painted on the side of a building that used to be Jenkins Food Market in the small commercial area of Trimble, TN which is a small city in Obion County. Kickapoo Joy Juice is a citrus-flavored soft drink brand owned by The Monarch Beverage Company. Perhaps more people are familiar with the name, which was taken from the Ll'l Abner comic strip (although in the cartoon, the beverage was alcoholic, but the drink you can buy is a soda.) The real world drink was introduced in 1965 under NuGrape, a former brand of The Monarch Beverage Company. That year, Nugrape worked out a deal with Al Capp, the owner of the Kickapoo Joy Juice rights, to produce the beverage as a carbonated soft drink. Capp, however, would have the last word on all advertising and promotion. Kickapoo Joy Juice's early advertising campaign was very similar to Mountain Dew's of the time – using characters from Li'l Abner to create and market a hillbilly feeling. Although the product is currently distributed largely in Asian markets, the can still comes decorated with a vintage Li'l Abner drawing. www.kickapoojoy.com.my/product.html
Brewton, AL Mural This mural was painted by Wes Hardin in 2001. The mural celebrates the local Logging industry. In the middle are a couple of men cutting down a tree and the rest of the scenes are early forms of logging trasportation. On the left is an old car or truck and on the right is a locomotive, with a smaller image of a wagon. For those of you who like New Deal era Post Office murals, the local post office also mad logging as its theme.

Agnew Hardware old sign - Chattanooga Agnew Hardware was a longtime mainstay along the north shore area of Chattanooga. The large painted mural is visible to people at Coolidge Park or those travelling over the Market Street Bridge. That sign also mentioned they sell Gilman Paint, Tools, Cement and Glass. They also have an old smaller sign visible to the people travelling east on Frazier. Today, the building houses the Association for Visual Arts.

Steam Train Mural - Bluff City, TN In the 1850's, the East Tennessee and Virginia Railroad looked to connect Knoxville to Bristol. To get there, they needed to cross the Holston River. While the bridge no longer exists, the southern bridge abutment and piers still remain. On the abutment, artist Tim Cross painted this mural of a steam train coming out of a tunnel. Bluff City went through several name changes in the Nineteenth Century. The city was originally Choate's Ford and then Middletown. After the railroad came through town, it changed to Union. That's not a good name to have in the Confederacy, so during the Civil War, it changed to Zollicoffer in honor of a Confederate General. After the war, it went back to Union until 1887 when Bluff City became the permanent name. UPDATE: Late in 2014, this mural was repainted and looks a little different.
Fading Pepsi Wall ad - Trimble, TN Painted on the side of a building that used to be Jenkins Food Market in the small commercial area of Trimble, which is a small city in Obion County.
"Gateway" - Belle Meade, TN This artwork on the side of the home at 734 Jackson Blvd. in the Belle Meade area of Nashville has become controversial. The home's owner, Louise Kohler, calls the mural "Gateway." However, some of the neighbors don't think the large painting fits in with the traditional, upscale neighborhood. Personally, I like it, but I don't live in Nashville's richest neighborhood. For the full story: www.newschannel5.com/story/17549591/belle-meade-mural-pro...
Mural at The Arcade, Downtown Nashville On the side of a white brick building near one of the side entrances to the Arcade is this 3D mural depicting some people haning out at on a balcony. This is one of three balconies that make up the mural. It was painted by Michael Cooper of Murals & More in 2001.
Welcome to Henning, Tennessee mural This mural must be several years old, so I will describe it the best I can. It's located on the side of a building in the small business district at the corner of Main St. and Haley St. Henning is best known for being the boyhood home of Alex Haley, author of Roots. The Roots logo is in the top right corner. Below that is "Home of Alex Haley" with his portrait almost completely faded. Below that is a copy of his book, along with several Emmy awards. Henning was also the home of Major League Baseball outfielder Jim Hickman. He spent six years of his thirteen year carrer playing for the Chicago Cubs, so Wrigley Field is pictured in the top left corner. Finally, Henning was also the home of Fred Montgomery. He was a close friend of Haley and also the first black mayor of Henning. Haley had started writing a book about Montgomery's life but it was unfinished when Haley died in 1992. Montgomery's life was instead recounted in the book Finding the Good by Lucas L. Johnson II.
Linden Arts & Historic District "Perry County Pride" is a 2009 mural by local award-winning artist Sonny Davis facing the courthouse near Linden's town square. At this spot was a long lasting advertising mural for Quasar televisions painted in the early 70's but eventually became too faded. The mural was commissioned by Vision Perry who has now added other art in and around the square. Scenes from this mural include a boy and his fishing pole, a water fall, a doublestack kiln and a Perry County flag.
Kingsport, TN History Mural There's a lot going on in this mural located in downtown Kingsport. The Downtown Kingsport Association commissioned the mural in 1986, when they hired Ellen Elmes for the painting. After over two decades of wear, they had her come back in 2010 and restore it to its original glory with a fresh repaint. Scenes represented include the old Netherland Inn all the way to the newer annual Santa Claus train. For the full story: www.timesnews.net/article.php?id=9023206
Cameo Theatre faded mural - Bristol, VA This is painted on the side of the building along State Street in Bristol that used to house the theater. The theater closed many years ago and recently was the offices of a radio station. In the last couple of years, the theater's marquee and sign were taken down, leaving this painted sign as the only thing highlighting where it was.
Bristol, VA NASCAR Mural Bristol of course has it's own Nascer Race, but since the mural mentions the Daytona 500, I thought I'd upload it on the day of the Daytona 500. The mural features Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty. The mural was painted in 2001, the year Earnhardt died. In the background, you may also notice a faded ad for Bristol Grocery Co., which is what this building used to be many years ago.
Welcome to Perry County mural "It's Just Our Nature" This mural is visible to westbound passengers on US412 when they're about to enter the Linden, TN town square. Over the past couple of years, the town square has been branded the "Arts & Historic District" with several murals having been added recently.
So Good... faded mural - Acworth, GA So GOOD It's friends made FAMOUS. That's all of it I can read. This is located in an alley right next to a restored vintage Coke Mural, so perhaps the rest of this mural has been covered up.
Combination of wall ads - Radford, VA In downtown Radford, there are two spots with vintage murals. First is this spot between two buildings. The other one is quicker to find since it faces the parking lot for the farmers market. The ad on the left has several things going on. Starting at the bottom is an ad for Wine of Cardui for Women. Cardui was made by the Chattanooga Medicine Company. One bottle was 9 ounces, and it was 19% alcohol, so I'm sure it numbed whatever pains a woman was struggling with. Above that appears to be two different versions for R.S. Carson, the Prescription Druggist. The ad on the right is for Cubanola, which calls itself the All Havana Filler 5 cent cigar. There is also a Cubanola ad at the other mural

Faded Coca-Cola Mural - Downtown Roanoke, VA Roanoke has it's share of well maintained or refurbished wall ads and murals. This is not one of them. This Coca-Mural is seen on Market Square along Salem Ave and windows have been added where the mural had been
Map of Tipton County Mural - Covington, TN Along the Covington town square is a small open space, used as a city park. Along the back of that space, painted on the wall of a building is this mural which highlights what the county looked like in 1942
Radford, VA Railroad painting Radford is a medium-sized town with quite a railroad presence, with lots of NS trains running between the historic downtown and the river. At this particular spot in the parking lot, the fence keeping wayward souls from the tracks was painted with a nice train mural with the name of the town spelled out. I couldn't fully decipher the name, but looked like K. Smith 2010 Hello to anyone who found this photo here: www.rumbleinthegarden.com/st-johns-baseball/2013/3/6/4064...

Faded Coca-Cola Mural - Dayton, TN This mural faces a general store along a corner of the Dayton Town Square. In the top corner of the ad is the word DRINK and in the bottom right corner is a coke bottle on a yellow circle. Above the Coke Mural is an ad for Mansfields Coffee Shoppe. A block away is a place called Mansfield's Diner, which I will assume is the same place.
Scottsville, KY Mural Along the main street through Scottsville, not far from the town square, is a small park with a gazebo and this mural. In addition to depicting a member of the Scottsville Merchant Band is an old building which I am assuming is an old, bygone Allen County courthouse.
Faded Coca-Cola Wall Ad - Glasgow, KY This as has quite faded lettering, but it looks like the letters on the bottle say Coca-Cola, although the letters for "Trademark" on the bottle are a lot easier to read. If you can't make this out at all, the main part of the mural is a giant hand holding a giant soda bottle. I will assume at one time there was a giant face drinking the giant bottle but the renovating of the building caused many of the bricks near the side to be replaced. The only other words I can make out are in the green circle, where I see Delicious and Refreshing, something else common on come murals. Next to this on the right is also a mural for Lou Ellis' Color Corner Studio. The front of the building faces to Glasgow's town square and the street here leading from the square is US31E.
Ronald Reagan Mural - Cookeville, TN This mural of Ronald Reagan was seen painted on the side of the Putnam County Republican Headquarters and faces the town square. The mural was painted by Ron Sweeney of Roland Advertising in July, 2011, and it took a couple of weeks to complete. Disclaimer: I am not looking for a politics debate to spring up in the comments. I am an equal time photographer and will upload anything I find interesting. If some local Democrat HQ paints an FDR mural, I'd upload that, too. "The Barn" - Chuckey, Tennessee At one time, there was a marker by the barn that was either gone by the time I got there, or I just didn't see it. The sign read: The Barn was built mid 20th century pimarily for farm use. The barn was readily visible from the old 11-E highway and quickly turned into a form of advertising for Corner and Central Drug Stores in Greeneville. Progress has moved business and traffic patterns to the new 11-E highway, leaving the barn bypassed by today's population. However, the barn continues to serve as a landmark today, preserving the history of one of Greene County's oldest towns. Davy Crockett: Born in Chuckey 1786 Glider: Ed Huffaker, early pioneer in aviation Steam Locomotive: Railroad and Fullens Depot Log House: Earnest Fort House built in 1784 First Aid Cross: Dr. Annis O. Several faded wall ads - Roanoke, VA This is in Downtown Roanoke. The building is along Salem Ave, and the view is seen along Norfolk Ave. from the base of the bridge before it crosses the tracks. Along the horizontal portion to the left, it has this: On the left it says: Delicious Refreshing Sold Everywhere On the right, it says ENJOY COCA-COLA. Below that is an art mural, that I'll make a wild guess and say is 10 years old. For the vertical section, the right edge of the ads have been truncated, perhaps because the street had to be widened at some point. Up top is an ad for a furniture store. The first four letters look like HART. Below that it a DRINK COCA-COLA with the OLA missing. Below that is 2 or 3 ads all faded together with nothing legible. I have a couple of closer up views - see the notes on the picture.

Farm Mural - West Jefferson, NC There are murals all over the downtown West Jefferson area. This may have been my favorite.
Knoxville Historic Train Mural Located in the Old City area of Knoxville. If you walk a few steps, you'll be on the tracks and can see the old Southern Depot. The artists of the 2001 mural are Eva Allawos, Walt Fieldsa & Randall Starnes.
Mural - Blountville, TN Painted along the building next door to the Sullivan County Courthouse. From left to right, it shows the advancement in civilization in 4 scenes.
Coca-Cola Mural - Pulaski, VA 5 cents - Delicious and Refreshing - 5 cents Drink Coca-Cola - Sold Everywhere Located in the small downtown area of Pulaski, VA along a wide building and facing Peak Creek. At some point over the last few decades it has been repainted, and even that has a slight fade to it. One of the things I like about this creek as it runs through town is the old built up rock wall, and at this spot, it's practically an extension of the side of the building.
Country Music Mural - West Jefferson, NC
Well Preserved Mail Pourch Tobacco Ad - Jonesborough, TN A.B. Cummings, Groceries, coal, Hay 8c. Trademark West Virginia Mail Pouch Tobacco for Chewing and Smoking. MAIL POUCH Bloch Bros. W-VA. This ad is painted on the side of an 1889 building that was at one time a saloon, but today is a gift shop known as the Mail Pouch Building. Mail Pouch is much better known for their painted barns, but they have a few wall ads also. It's rare to see one as well preserved as this one. It was originally painted in 1902. Not too long after that, an adjacent building was built next door and the paint was kept from the elements for a few decades. In the 60's, that building was torn down and this sign was rediscovered. Compare it to this one in Cookeville which may be just as old. The Mail Pouch Barnstormers designate this one as MPS 42-90-01
Painting of the Dickson County Courthouse The Dickson County Courthouse in Charlotte, TN is the oldest courthouse in the state, built in 1830. (The Hawkins Co. Courthouse in Rogersville also makes this claim citing how this courthouse has been changed and expanded while theirs hasn't.) This is the way the courthouse looked back then, with some noticeable changes from today. Wings were added on both sides in 1931. The chimneys were removed and the roof, and shutters and dome on the tower are now white instead of red. In the doorway are Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Jackson. Did they ever conduct business here or are they just here for effect? For more info on the mural, look here: seemidtn.com/gallery3/index.php?album=MidTN-Counties/dick...
Charlotte Through the Years Mural Accessible from a parking lot at the corner of Water St. and Spencer alley is this mural entitled Charlotte Through the Years. The mural was painted by 5th grade students at Charlotte Elementary School from the 2004-05 class and the 2005-06 class. Depicted on the mural are several of the historic building at the square or nearby. I took closeup photos of the mural in segments which you can see on my website here: seemidtn.com/gallery3/index.php?album=MidTN-Counties/dick...
Duck River Slackwater Navigation Co. Trust Your Cargo to us! This is one of seven small murals around the Nelson House Hotel a block north of the Columbia, TN town square. They have been painted by local mural artist Bonnie Callewaert. Three of them are visible in a parking lot next to the historic hotel and the other four are behind the building. Other than Aesthetics, I can't find any info on why or when on these. I had never heard of this company or Slackwater Navigation in general. The company operated along the Duck River between Columbia and Centerville in the 1840s.
Smoky Mountain Music History This lovely mural is painted on the side of Roy's Record Shop, a brick building facing a parking lot in the center of Maryville, TN Artist: Henrietta Foy Muralists: Walt Fieldsa & Katie Gamble If I knew my country music a little better, I could identify more of the people depicted here. I think we have: Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn in the bottom corner near the WSM Grand Ole Opry stage. Sixteen Tons mine in the opposite corner. Minnie Pearl dancing with someone. Lester Flatt. Earl Scruggs. The Carter family. A moonshine still and some Indians. Knoxville's WDVX. Harmonica. Banjoes.
The movie murals of the Lyric Theater There is a small picnic area between the Lyric Theater of downtown Loudon, TN and the next business. Images of classic movies and stars are painted here. Unfortunatley, access to the area was locked the day I was there, or I would have gotten a better view.
Faded Cocal-Cola mural - Athens, TN Seen near the town square. Above the Coke ad is also an ad for Jas. L Crow Jr. Poultry & Eggs
Ruby Falls / Broad St. Machine Co. Experience Breathtaking Ruby Falls Broad Street Machine Co. Inc Manufacturers of Tufting Machines. two murals, one building - Broad Street in the gritty south of downtown area of Chattanooga. Apparently, this building is the Broad Street Machine company and they look to still be in business. I believe this is also the first time I've come across the word Tufting.
Johnson City, TN Coke Mural For an old unrestored Coke Mural, this one is rather well preserved. It looks like there was another building that used to be next to this one. It would have been built after the mural was painted and then torn down more recently. Thus, the bottom half of the fading ad (below the seam) was less exposed to the elements and retains more of the paint. Delicious and refreshing DRINK Coca-Cola 5¢ Relieves Fatigue Sold Everywhere
Coca-Cola - Sold Everywhere 5¢ Delicious and refreshing Drink Coca-Cola SOLD EVERYWHERE 5¢ This restored coke mural is one of two in the small town of Acworth, GA in Cobb County. (The other one is on the side of the tracks with fewer businesses)

Coke Mural - Bristol, VA Not the oldest vintage mural around but still a little faded
Benton Co. Pearl Mural "Pearl Capitol of the U.S.A." I guess that ought to be capitAl instead of capitOl, but I guess I always get the two words mixed up. The county gave itself this moniker beacuse of the Birdsong Marina freshwater pearl farm, which is just up the road on state highway TN 191. This mural is at the town square of Camden, which is the county seat.
Rockwood, TN Coke Mural This is a newer Coke mural than I usually see for the faded Coke ads, with the 80's slogan "Coke is it!"
Restored Coca-Cola mural - Adairsville, GA If you drive along the "Old Dixie Highway" or "old US 41" going northbound through Adairsville, GA, you will see this old restored Coca-Cola mural. This building is now the Bogle Dress Shop, but at some time, it used to be someone's General Merchandise store
Lucille's Coca-Cola Mural located in Old City area of Knoxville. this is painted on the side of a building that used to be Lucille's, a small restaurant and jazz venue. The mural is believed to date back to 1935. Update: This mural was restored by Coca-Cola in 2015. See the story here: wate.com/2015/10/22/renovated-historic-coca-cola-sign-unv...

Cameron-Patton Hotel / Coca-Cola Mural Along the main road through the heart of South Pittsburg, TN I don't have any info about this former hotel other than the name of the building on the side, in addition to the classic Drink Coca-Cola mural.
First Methodist Church of Columbia painting This painting in Downtown Columbia commemorates the first Methodist Episcopal Church of Columbia from 1819.
Architecture of Morristown: Faded Coke Mural The central Shopping District of Morristown has one thing that really stands out. If you go to any preserved old town, you're going to find in the heart of town, a bunch of old buildings with interesting storefronts and various older acrhitectural styles. In the late 1960s, Morristown decided they had a problem needing a unique solution. Town leaders decided to build second-story skywalks, which they called the SkyMart. The idea was you could double the number of businesses along the main strip, potentially doubling the number of shoppers that come to town. Did it work? If it had, you'd be seeing it in other small cities, and you won't see it anywhere other than Cincinnati, which is a big city where it didn't work. I don't know what's transpired over the last 40 years, but when I walked the skywalk, I didn't see any businesses I could shop in. On any given day, I suppose you could find walkers, locals getting to their upper floor apartments, and the occasional tourist. Even still, if you go to the Morristown website or find a Hamblen County brochure, this will be listed as a thing to see. Photographically, you can see things you won't see anywhere else, like getting up close to a ghost wall ad. On the down side, you can only get the top half of some of the more interesting buildings. For the full story, check out this document on the Morristown website: www.morristownchamber.com/documents/SkyMart.pdf
J.R. Loyd & Sons Mural ad Bridgeport, Al
Drink Coca-Cola in Bottles Along the main road through South Pittsburgh. It also has a huge tree/bush in front of it making it tough to see. The top ad is very faded, but I see the word coffee.
Grand Hotel Wall Ad The Grand Hotel was located in Downtown Chattanooga along Market Street, appealing to Passengers coming to town along the Chattanooga Choo-Choo which was almost across the street. This faded wall ad is on the side of that building which is not a hotel anymore. The second line says "Fire Proof." Back in the day when that was a major selling point that not all hotels must have been able to claim.
Restored Acworth, GA Coke Mural The areas aroung atlanta are of course Coke country. I'm sure there used to be hundreds of Coca-Cola wall ads all around, and some of them have been preserved by being restores, such as this one in Acworth, GA. There are two restored Coke murals in Acworth and this one is on the side of the tracks with fewer businesses. At one time at this spot was another mural for Mother's Self-Rising Flour occupying the entire side of the building, so now the restored coke mural appears to take up a corner of that other ad.

Old Sears Ad Mural - Downtown Nashville Here's one I'd never noticed before, when Sears was known as the Farm and Tire Store. I wonder how far that goes back? It's located on the side of what became Walter Nipper's Sporting Goods Store.

3d Wall Mural The odd thing about this mural is that it takes a regular flat concrete surface and the mural is painted on it to look like it's 3d and made by stone. This was painted by Michael Cooper of Murals & More in June 06. This is in Downtown Nashville at Bicentennial Mall. This is part of a retaining wall and it's painted to look like the train bridge over 6th Ave.

World's Oldest Coca-Cola Mural You see the old Coke murals all over the place, and it had to start somewhere. Not surprisingly, it wasn't far from Atlanta. This mural was painted on the side of Young Brother's Pharmacy in Cartersville, GA. In 1894, James Couden, a Coca-Cola syrup salesman, felt the vast exterior of the building would make a great location to advertise his product. 100 years later, preservationists wanted to see what this sign originally looked like and 25 layers of paint were carefully removed. Thus, in 1994 the sign was repainted and preserved to look like it did a century earlier. This sign is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. When it was painted, the target audience would likely be train passengers (railroad tracks are right behind me.) but a few decades later, the Dixie Highway passed by also.

Opryland Ballroom Mural 1: Jubilee Hall In Opryland Hotel's original ballroom area, the walls are painted to depict scenes from Nashville around the time of Tennessee's Centennial, in the late 1800's. To view the entire set of 8, Click Here. Jubilee Hall, dedicated in January 1876, is one of the oldest structures continuously in use for educational purposes by the African American community. Today, the six-story building serves as a residence for first-year female students. Over the years, as many as three generations of women in the same family--grandmother, mother, and daughter--have at different times occupied the same dormitory suite, making Jubilee Hall one of the most cherished buildings on the campus. Jubilee Hall has received recognition from the State of Tennessee in the form of a historical marker denoting the structure's significance. In 1976 the National Park Service designated Jubilee Hall as a National Historic Landmark.

Fuston's Antique's Ad Mural Woodbury, TN - Seen along US70S. There used to be 2 location's of Fuston's, the one in Smithville and the one in the block of buildings this mural is on. First Baptist Church of East Nashville 601 Main St., Listed on the National Register of Historical Places. Classical Revival architecture. The church building was built in 1928 on the corner of Main and Sixth streets. It was expanded in 1931 and continuously improved, especially from 1934 through 1941. The front entrance of the church was restructured because of the widening of Main Street during the 1960s. Built in a Classical Revival design, this beautiful church building contains a magnificent pipe organ, melodic chimes, a mural by Tennessee State University professor and artist Frances Thompson, and memorial windows.
Faded U.S. 70 Mural While not as historically significant as the "National Road" (US 40) or "Lincoln Highway" (US 30), U.S. 70 was one of the prominent east-west highways across America, and was known as Broadway of America. In the heart of Dickson, TN, this is all that remains of a mural that depicts the route of Broadway of America through Tennessee, however with East and West switched. Towns identified along the mural are Bristol, Kingsport, Rogersville, Rutledge, Knoxville, Kingston, Rockwood, Crossville, Sparta, McMinnville, Woodbury, Murfreesboro, Nashville, White Bluff, Burns, Dickson, Tenn City, McEwen, Waverly, Camden, Bruceton, Huntington, Jackson, Brownsville and Memphis. For those of you that are interested in such things, the route shows here follows what is now US 70S instead of US70 from Nashville to Sparta, which is an older configuration. Before it was part of Broadway of America, this route was originally known as the Memphis-to-Bristol Highway or State Route 1. I'd love to find more information about this, or see an old picture of it in it's glory days.

Kissing in the green car Or, more accurately: Kissing someone that vaguely looks like Barbara Bush while in the happy cross-eyed green car. Bell Buckle, TN full mural Great Mural - Tough to photograph location as this is sort of facing an alley. Bell Buckle is now home to the famous RC Cola and Moon Pie festival which will take place on Sat, June 21. I plan on being there, but I also wanted to visit the small town and enjoy the charm on a day when a large number of people don't show up. I split the mural in half and link to those two photos below. On those pages, I'll go into much greater detail on what's in the mural Hello to anyone who found this here: www.onlyinyourstate.com/tennessee/cheap-road-trips-tn/ 10 Inexpensive Road Trip Destinations In Tennessee That Won’t Break The Bank
Bell Buckle Mural - right half Great Mural - Tough to photograph location as this is sort of facing an alley. Bell Buckle is now home to the famous RC Cola and Moon Pie festival which will take place on Sat, June 21. I plan on being there, but I also wanted to visit the small town and enjoy the charm on a day when a large number of people don't show up. On the left of this picture is a Christmas tree. Next is a motorcyclist driving up to the row of stores (mostly antique stores) that make up the center of town. The back of these stores are behind me. In the center of the parking area is the red white and blue quilt pattern. The tallest building with the flag in front of it is the town hall. The lookout Moon Pie is made in Chattanooga Since 1917. If there's any other brand, I haven't seen it. I hadn't bought a moon pie in many years, and didn't even know there were new flavors of Orange, Lemon and Strawberry. The guy in the store said those flavors had been around for over a decade as I paid 75 cents for a double-decker orange moon pie, not realizing I could get one for half that price at most other places in the south. Later, I bought a box of 12 at walmart for $3. Finally is a vintage bottle of Royal Crown Cola. I'd never seen that old design before, until I was in the store with the 75 cent moon pies, as they had these vintage bottles of RC for over $100. I fully expect to pay $2 for a current bottle of RC at the festival, at which point, I won't desire another RC for another year. Riverboat Mural - Celina, TN Now, people go to Celina to go to Dale Hollow Lake, but the town began as an important river town along the Cumberland River, as this mural shows a riverboat. A Bald Eagle is included for the fun of it. This is located at the town square, in the small parking lot of a restaurant, which is why there's a small shed blocking the view.
