He said, "Make sure you prominently feature..." When I go to the county fair, one of the things I sometimes like to go see is the livestock competitions, although I bet 98% of fairgoers are oblivious that it's even a part of the fair. I suppose it goes back to the thought that this is why many fairs started in the first place. It was 6:30 and I just finished watching the pig races. There was nothing else going on that I had to make for over an hour, so I decided to watch some of the judging, joining about another dozen people on the bleachers. Before I could get to sit down, this man named Dale got my attention. He asked if I was the official fair photographer. I'm not, but I told him I did have fair photo experience. He asked if he could hire me to take some pictures of his bulls for him. Indeed, I was willing. (This beats taking pictures of the livestock being paraded past me 20 feet away during the official judging.) I told him that while I am familair with photography, I do not know what makes a bull a quality bull. Dale untied his blue ribbon winning white bull and tugged it into the sunlight. He said, "Make sure you get the nuts. The nuts on this bull are better than the nuts on other bulls. Its the nuts that the judges are looking at when they inspect the bulls. Make sure the nuts are fully displayed." After taking a dozen shots of this fellow, Dale's son brought out a female bull. (at this point, I was confused. I thought a female bull was a "cow" but there were no utters or male body parts. What do I know? I'm just city-folk and I don't think these guys were trying to fool me.)
Seattle Wheel The Seattle Wheel, which comes to the Williamson County Fair every year is probably my favorite ferris wheel to photograph. It's so colorful. The biggest problem is finding somewhere to stand to get the picture. My blurred motion photo of this from 2 years ago was my first ever photo to make it to explore.
CCCP Ride - Blurred motion This year at the Williamson County Fair, I spent some time on the midway trying to take blurred motion pictures of many of the other rides. I was hoping for something magical, but their fireworks were not all that spectacular.

"Awesome Catering" Awesome, like totally rad! Pig Popsicle?!? As of 8-09-2008, I am the only one on flickr with a tagged photo of "Pig Popsicle" When you look at the catfish's facial expression, I am not sure if he's onboard with the whole "eat me" concept.
Stuntbike 1 This would be totally awesome rad cool if it was outside and I could capture it better. They got a volunteeer from the crowd. They sat an empty chair on the platform and told the crowd that the guy on the bike would go airborne over whoever sits in the chair. They demostrated with a trial run where they "accidentally" missed and knocked the chair over. The boy was brave and went up there anyway and was easily cleared.
Stuntbike 2 This would be totally awesome rad cool if it was outside and I could capture it better. In round 2, another bike guy stood up and was cleared really high so he tried to jump up and hit the lower tire.
Stuntbike 3 This would be totally awesome rad cool if it was outside and I could capture it better. in rounds 3 and 4, the guy on the bike did a flip in the air while clearing the guy in the chair
Stuntbike 4 This would be totally awesome rad cool if it was outside and I could capture it better. in rounds 3 and 4, the guy on the bike did a flip in the air while clearing the guy in the chair

Poultry 2 Not a horror b-movie monster but something similar to a rooster.

2010 TN State Fair: Poultry
2010 TN State Fair: Pastry This blue ribbon winning pastry was made to look like a basket of fall leaves. Which ones are leaves and which ones are baked?
2010 TN State Fair: Quilt The People's Choice Award winning quilt
2010 TN State Fair: Zebu At the Petting Zoo was the first time I can say I'd ever photographed a Zebu. It's a small cattle.
2010 TN State Fair: Naked Neck The Naked Neck is a type of chicken with no feathers on its neck such that people mistakenly think it's a turkey. It was in the poultry barn
2010 TN State Fair: Jamaican Bananas These seemed to be popular this year
2010 TN State Fair: Stamp art This blue ribbon winning Creative Arts entry featured a virtual rainbow of mono-colored circa 1940's U.S. stamps aranged in this pinwheel design.
2010 TN State Fair: Rabbit quite the timid little fella.
2010 TN State Fair: Rubber Duck collection Quite a collection! From Dracula to Rudolph to Grease.
2010 TN State Fair: Ferris Wheel The interesting thing about the design of this ferris wheel was the near unpredictable pattern of lights made when trying to capture the blurred motion.
2010 TN State Fair: Fair Cake design Don't leave this photo until you find the cows.
2010 TN State Fair: Record Setting Watermelon weighing in at 264 pounds, this is the record-breaking state fair watermelon.
2010 TN State Fair: Picnic Pastry This blue ribbon winning submission in the baked goods contest is of a picnic table. I thought the best way to see it was from above. 2010 TN State Fair: Sheep Show Sheep can be stubborn and getting them to behave is no small task. Here, we see different ways of getting the sheep to stay in their pose.
2010 TN State Fair: Ferris Wheel The midway rides were held in a different location than in previous years. In the past, all the rides were held near the location of the old Fair Park, but this year, the midway was located right in the middle of everything. Many people liked how this made the rides convenient to everything else. It did make a small challenge for people like me who try and take blurred motion photos of the ferris wheel. This unusual angle was taken from the parking lot where I had a chance to look up the hill to the wheel. One thing I like about the design of this ferris wheel was the near unpredictable pattern of lights made when trying to capture the blurred motion. You never knew how it was going to come out. During this shot, the lights almost acted like chaser lights moving from the middle outward, so when the wheel was spinning, this pattern was created.
2010 TN State Fair: Ag Magic Show The lady on the right, who tours as the Ag Magic Show is shown here performing a trick with a member of the audience. She took a newspaper and rolled it into a tube and cut one end of the tube into strips to make it look like a tree. With the audience participant looking concerned, the magician pured some strawberry milk into the top of the tube, only to unroll the tube and find it dry.

2010 TN State Fair: Winning Youth Artwork Not only was this black and white pencil drawing from a youth entrant the blue-ribbon winning entry in it's category, it was also named best-in-show! Very remarkable art!
2010 TN State Fair: Petting Zoo Sheep While with black spots, like a cow or a doberman.
2010 TN State Fair: Pastry design a pig eating corn...and the whole thing's a blue-ribbon winning dessert.

2010 TN State Fair: Pastry Design Another blue-ribbon winning dessert, this time shaped like a burger!
2010 TN State Fair: Waiting for the next round While one class of breed is being judged, the next entrants line up to be ready for their turn.
During this view, the lights on the inside and outside lit up, but those in the middle stayed off to make it almost look hollow! For those of you who follow my photostream, this is the end of my 2010 TN State Fair set.

2010 Lincoln Co. Fair Harness Racing The Lincoln County Fair is the only event in Tennessee where you can see harness racing. If you've never seen harness racing before, the big difference between this and the more common thoroughbred racing is the horse is harnessed to a two-wheeled cart (or sulky) carrying the driver. This event is under the oversight of the U.S. Trotting Association. I picked 10 of my favorite harness racing photos to put on flickr. You can see that set here: www.flickr.com/photos/brent_nashville/tags/2010harnessrac... T-Shirt: Thank God for my Smokin' Hot Wife This T-shirt was seen at the 2011 Wilson County Fair, and is based on something else that happened in the county a little less than a month ago. If you have no idea what it's about, I suggest you watch this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=J74y88YuSJ8
Old Texas Soda Co. This microbrew was seen at the 2011 Wilson County Fair in Lebanon, TN. The price seems high at first - $12. But with that, you get a 32oz. stainless steel mug and free refills all day. On tap, they had seven flavors: Root Beer, Diet Root Beer, Birch Beer, Vanilla Cream, Orange Cream, Grape and Cherry. Each time you return, they'll scoop ice into your mug and you can get what you want. I've never been a fan of root beer or grape sodas, but I thought their Orange Cream was excellent and the Cherry was also really good.
Baxter the Caboose - Lebanon, TN Baxter was a former caboose of Burlington Northern that was donated in 2007 to Fiddler's Grove at the Wilson County Fairgrounds. To assist with moving the Caboose here was Nashville & Eastern Railroad, which like the fair, is operated in Lebanon. Then, with the help of McCord Crane Service, the caboose was placed atop a truck and given a police escort as it made its way to Fiddler's Grove. The NCStL Logo was added later Today, the Caboose stands as a proud reminder of the golden age of Railroads. J.D. and Ann Floyd donated the caboose in honor of Billy Baxter. (The Floyds and the Baxters co-owned Cumberland Valley Shows, a fair midway company.) Before this, the caboose was given to the Floyds by the Greater Gulf State Fair in Mobile Al.

2011 Tennessee State Fair Sheep A few years ago, I was hired by the fair as their photographer that year. In recent times, as they transition from a government run organization to a non-profit, they have been increasingly needful of volunteers. I have allowed the fair to use any of my 2011 fair photos on my website to promote the 2012 fair. This sheep photo must have been of particular interest to them as it has already appeared in 2 (that I know of) local papers, Mature Lifestyles of Tennessee and Validity Magazine.
Coffee County Fair 2013: Astro Wheel In 2013, the Coffee County Fair in Manchester, TN had a midway provided by Kissel Rides and Shows. This is the text of the info marker at the Astro Wheel: In 1967 the Astro Wheel was designed by Chance Manufacturing, and was built in their Witchita, Kansas facility in 1967. Only nine were ever made. The Astro Wheel was unpopular with Carnival owners of that era, due to the fact, the ride required multiple trailers to transport and the excessive amount of man-hours to assemble the seventy-three foot tall device. Only four are still known to be in existence. This particular Astro Wheel is believed to be the first one ever manufactured. It was found in a closing amusement park and was headed for certain destruction. Purchased by Kissel Rides and Shows, in 1995, our Astro Wheel quickly became a Midway favorite. Although, 2004 brought about a sad change for the massive ride. The owner at that time decided to retire the machine and replace it with a smaller, more portable wheel. The unique amusement device was once again rescued when Kissel Rides and Shows was purchased in 2005. The new owners set things in motion to not only use the wheel, but to totally restore it to pristine condition. Fast Facts: 1967 year of manufacture 73 feet tall 2 semi trailers to transport 6 men to assemble 65 kilowatts to power 750-800 passengers per hour 2009 year of renovation 6051 individual lights 153 gallons of paint 2 miles of electrical wire 6 tons of sandblast sand $100,000 Please enjoy yourself while riding an Americal Classic..... 2013 Coffee Co. Fair: Astro Wheel in the Day For the photo shown here, the ferris wheel was photographed during the day, although durng the "golden hour" close to an hour before sundown. For this photo, I have attached a variable neutral density filter to my camera, whixh explains the contrast in sky color from one side to the other (a Variable ND filter is two polarizers together, and depending on how it is set can be anywhere from an ND1 to ND64. Mine was positoned close to ND16 for this photo.) For the photos with the wheel in motion, I attempted a daytime blurred motion ferris wheel photo, which doesn't appear to have been tried very often. 2013 Coffee Co. Fair: Spider Ride Along the midway, the spider ride is a smaller fun thrill ride that spins people around as they bounce up and down. This is a blurred motion long exposure photo taken at dusk.
2013 Coffee County Fair: Downdraft Blurred Motion in the Day The Downdraft is a ride similar to the Hurricane. Read more here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane To get this look in the daytime required f/22 and a strong ND filter.

2013 Coffee Co. Fair: Swing Ride Blurred Motion Kessel Rides runs the Midway at the Coffee County Fair. This is a similar premise to other swing rides. However, most of the wave swingers seem to be taller and have more elaborate tops to them. This one just looks like a vortex in this blurred motion photo. The lights on the ride would change from blue to purple to red.

Atmos-FEAR Atmos-Fear is a drop tower ride seen along the Modway at the 2013 Coffee County Fair in Mancheter, TN. From the perspective of a guy on the ground like me who is more interested in photographing things, I like how this one uses a fog machine on the way up.
Atmos-FEAR and an unexpected camera trick Atmos-Fear is a drop tower ride seen along the Modway at the 2013 Coffee County Fair in Mancheter, TN. From the perspective of a guy on the ground like me who is more interested in photographing things, I like how this one uses a fog machine on the way up. If you have followed my photostream, you'll see that I wanted to try blurred motion of several fair rides that normally isn't tried. As I set up for the drop tower, I was expecting just a straight-line blur from the top to the bottom. However, as I took this long exposure photo, a strobe light flashed a few times, which appeared to freeze the position of the riders in multiple places in this single exposure.
2013 Coffee County Fair: Ferris Wheel At the 2013 Coffee County Fair, they had this traditional ferris wheel in addition to the Astro Wheel. The Midway was operated by Kissel Rides and Shows. I photographed this ride at a couple of different times of the day at different exposure lengths. Daytime photos were generally an hour before sunset near the "golden hour" and the night shots were done close to dusk. The daytime blurred motion photos were accomplished with a small aperture and a variable ND filter which was probably set around ND16. (Besides, how often do you get to see a daytime blurred motion ferris wheel?) For my other blurred motion fair photos, look here.
Coffee County Fair 2013: Rabbit Barn At the fairgrounds in Manchester, TN, the Rabbit Barn is laid out with all the bunny cages all together in one long row. The whole time I was there, this one rabbit was allowed to roam free along the top of the cages. I don't know if freedom was good or bad as it was the bunny everyone could pet. For those of you that are looking for sweet photos of bunnies, often it would stop and nuzzle and bunny kiss the one in the cage below it.

2013 Coffee County Fair: Blue Ribbon Winning Quilt Don't like the cold months? Stare at this quilt for a while and think about the warmth associated with this quilt. For an added touch, there are some seashells affixed to the quilt along the shoreline.

Livesay Mill - Fiddler's Grove The Livesay Mill is now one the many historic buildings located at Fiddler's Grove at the Wilson County Fairgrounds in Lebanon, TN. Here is the description from the Fiddler's Grove website: Livesay Mill was built in 1879 on the Clinch River at Kyles Ford near the Tennessee Virginia State Line in Hancock County. The Grist Mill was water powered using a pair of grinding stones to grind corn for meal and wheat for flour. According to deed records, S. W. Carter and John Livesay along with other family members settled in Sneedville prior to the Civil War. Mr. Jerry McFarland acquired the mill and donated it to Fiddlers Grove in 2005. The millhouse was built in Fiddlers Grove in 2006 and the Grist Mill was installed and became operational during the Wilson County Fair in 2007. www.fiddlersgrove.org/facilities/historical-buildings/31-...
Jenkins County Courthouse - Fair on the Square I arrived in Millen on the afternoon of the yearly Fair on the Square. Only one carnival ride, the "Berry Go Round" had not been removed. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jenkins_County_Courthouse Jenkins County Courthouse is a historic county courthouse in Millen, GA. Designed in a Neoclassical Revival architecture style by L.F. Goodrich, it was built in 1910. Unlike most courthouses in Georgia of the period, this one is three stories tall. It has columns that are plain and fluted, which are on high bases. The building has a bracketed cornice. On top is a copper-domed clock tower. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 18, 1980
Honeysuckle Hill's Venetian Carousel Honeysuckle Hill is a Agritourism site in Southwest Robertson County with a corn maze and pumpkin patch. In addition, they have many of the features popular with other fall farms, such as hayrides, large slides and a popcorn popper inflatable trampoline. I believe the Carousel is new for 2021. In my opinion, Honeysuckle Hill is the best agritourism site in Middle Tennessee based of their lineup of activities. The Carousel joins the Cornado as their second carnival ride.
