Lorraine Motel / National Civil Rights Museum 1959 Dodge & 1968 Cadillac As America honors Martin Luther King, Jr. on the third Monday in January, I'd like to share these photos of the National Civil Rights Museum that promotes the vision that Dr. King embraced. Walter Bailey purchased the Windsor Hotel in 1945 and renamed it the Lorraine Motel. Located close the the center of Memphis, during the days of segregation the motel catered to an upscale black clientele. In April 1968, King traveled to Memphis in support of striking sanitation workers. King stayed in room 306, located on the second floor of the Lorraine Motel. At 6:01 PM on April 4, 1968 while he was standing on the balcony outside his room, King was struck by a single bullet, causing him to fall backwards unconscious. Following the assassination, Bailey left Room 306 undisturbed. While the Motel remained open for a few more years, Bailey worked to preserve the motel as a historic site raising funds to Save the Lorraine. The Martin Luther King Memorial Foundation bought the motel in 1982. The Motel officially closed in 1998 as the property transformed into a museum. For architectural designs, the museum called upon McKissack & McKissack from Nashville, the first African American architecture firm in America. After purchasing adjoining property, the museum opened in Sept. 1991. Today, on the grounds of the museum, a wreath is placed at the balcony where King was hit. The original sign for the museum has been preserved outside. From this iconic photo from the balcony there are two cars visible below, and there are replicas of these two cars at the museum today. For now, customers of the museum are allowed to look into the window of Room 306.

Cooter's Place Dukes of Hazzard Museum Cooter's is located in Music Valley, the touristy area of Nashville near Opryland Hotel. With another location in Gatlinburg, the Dukes of Hazzard Museum is owned by Ben Jones who played Cooter Davenport on the show. Of course, what everyone wants to see is outside the museum as the General Lee is on display along with Cooter's tow truck. One more fun fact: Ben Jones was a U.S. Democrat Congressman from Georgia after being on the show. Update from July 2015: Cooter's made the news recently. With the Confederate flag controversy following the recent South Carolina church shootings, many people have called for the flag to be taken down from various places. Defenders of the flag say it represents Southern pride and heritage, but not hate. Jones issued a statement where the flag was not going to be taken down from any of these Dukes of Hazzard museums. Old Car City, USA - White, GA Walk 6 miles of trails! Located along highway US411, this roadside attraction might be the perfect spot for the old car lover. This place opened as a car dealership in 1931. At some point over the years, the business became a junkyard. As the decades went by, they kept adding more cars (over 4,000) and expanded to 34 acres. At some point, they realized they were better off as a tourist attraction than a junkyard. They offer the chance to see classic car relics up through the 70s. I didn't even know this place existed when I drove past it. They were already closed for the day. I didn't even realize it was a tourist destination when I stopped, as I just wanted to take a picture of their fence, which had their name spelled out in hubcaps. According to their website, they have two different admission prices, depending on whether or not you're going to bring a camera. $25 if you are going to take photos and $15 if you are not. oldcarcityusa.com/
I Dream of Weenie hot dog stand This popular place to get a hot dog is located in a converted VW bus in East Nashville's trendy Five Points neighborhood. If you hadn't guessed it yet, the name is a play on the 1960's TV sitcom I Dream of Jeannie. The logo on the sign depicts a hot dog that looks like genie Barbara Eden. Also, check out the hot dog flower pots on the railing.

1932 Helicron Lane Motor Museum - Nashville, TN Constructed in 1932, this one-of-a-kind propeller driven car was discovered in a barn in France in 2000 having been placed there by the original owner in the late 30's. Little could be seen of it through the rubble. It was completely rebuilt but many of the mechanical components are original, such as the frame, wire wheels, dashboard, steering wheel, steering gear, brake pedal, light switch, headlights, and the type plate. The wood frame was sandblasted and treated. The steering gear was rebuilt, and the interior was upholstered. The car steers with the rear wheels and only those wheels have springs. It is currently equipped with a Citroen GS engine with the propeller coupled directly to the crankshaft. The Helicron passed the French safety inspection in 2000 and is approved for use on their roads. Hello to anyone who found this here: gizmodo.com/the-dodos-we-made-26-propeller-driven-machine... 100 Things to see at the fair #7: Tractor Pull I had a unique opportunity to spend several days at the 2008 Tennessee State Fair. There was so much to see, it will take 100 images to get it all in. Perhaps the think I liked the most about the tractor & truck pull was to see how these people "Pimped their tractors" and White Lightning was my personal favorite.
100 Things to see at the fair #64: Ride in a monster truck I had a unique opportunity to spend several days at the 2008 Tennessee State Fair. There was so much to see, it will take 100 images to get it all in. Before and after the Monster Truck show, fair patrons had the opportunity to ride in the flatbed (and held down by a safety bar) of Carolina Crusher, a monster truck retired from competition. Cost was $10.

Oscar Mayer Wienermobile I was able to mark one item off my bucket list in 2016 when I was able to finally photograph the iconic yet elusive Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. I'm not sure why this became so important to me, but along the way I acquired a plush version along with a hot wheel of the noteworthy car. Then, in the spring of 2016 I went to my regular grocery store and there it was! I only had the camera on my phone, but there it was. Then, when I got out of my car, it drove off because it had to visit a dozen more grocery stores that weekend. I don't they plan their stops too far in advance, but it's tough to find out where they will be. The only way to track it is with their app, which never worked to well for me. Then, I learned they would be at the 4th of July celebration in downtown Franklin, TN, so I made sure that is how I would spend my holiday. I found it, and it was parked right next to the county courthouse on 3rd Ave. I also got a Wienerwhistle for my son. Read the history of the car here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wienermobile
Cannon Courthouse & Car Show 2 My wife and I were travelling to Woodbury, TN one Saturday afternoon in the fall. We stopped at a restaurant on the town square, and while we were eating, a bunch of classic cars pulled up to the square and a car show broke out. My father-in-law has a '49 Plymouth that he takes to shows, but beyond that, I don't know what I'm looking at. My interest is more in courthouses, and I thought this made for an interesting photo opportunity. If you can help identify this Camaro z28, I'd appreciate it.

Animatronic Son of a President Charlie Taft was the son of President Taft. He was born in Cincinnati and moved to the White House at age 11. As an adult, he became a lawyer in Cincinnati, then a councilman, and eventually Mayor. Later in life, Charlie acquired and restored his boyhood home so it could be preserved as the William Howard Taft National Historic Site. After he passed away, this display in the visitor's center was built with a robotic talking likeness. He loved fishing, so the display was made to look like he was setting up on the riverbank. The display also features the back portion of his '70 Ford Maverick which always had a canoe on top. It might seem strange for a display at a President's historic site to feature such a display for somebody else. However, when you consider the relationship, the effort he put in to preserving the site, and his larger tie to the Cincinnati community, it makes sense.

2019 Reds Opening Day - 1957 GM Bus In a Pre-Covid world, the Cincinnati Reds had arguably the best opening day traditions of any MLB team. Part of that tradition is the Findlay Market Parade before the day game. In 2019, I was able to attend these festivities. It was the 150th season of the Reds and the 100th year of the parade. I didn't get home for another week, and I felt it was too late to share any photos; I'd save them for next year. The next year came and there were no fans or parade for the shortened season. This year, some fans can return, but there's still no parade. Yet, if I don't upload some photos now, I might never get around to it. In this photo, one parade entry was a 1957 GM Transit bus #359. This is part of the fleet owned by the Cincinnati Transit Historical Association. The listed destination is Crosley Field, which was the home of the reds back then
Ford Fairlane 500 - Days Gone By Museum There is a hidden gem museum in the small town of Portland, TN which is worth the drive from Nashville. Since there is no description of this, I can only guess as to what this is. I suspect someone took parts from a motorcycle and was inspired to make it look like Evel Knievel's Skycycle. VW Truck "Double Mack" - Days Gone By Museum There is a hidden gem museum in the small town of Portland, TN which is worth the drive from Nashville. It started as a private collection of tractors, but has expanded to much more, including multiple forms of transportation: Cars (hot rods, race cars, Volkswagens, 1920s, etc.), trucks, motorcycles, fire engines, a couple of planes and a caboose. Other highlights include vintage toys, cameras, and Maytag. On this specific item, I think the owner likes items which have been tinkered with. Hence someone took this VW T1 bus or truck and added a fifth wheel hitch. I'd have to imagine, it doesn't have too much of a hauling capacity. Tourist Tram Express - Days Gone By Museum I'm not sure where this originally came from, but the owner of the museum painted his own logo on this tram. I Dream of Weenie Or, as the other stand says, "East Nashville's only Full Service Weenery." This popular place to get a hot dog is located in a converted VW bus in East Nashville's trendy Five Points neighborhood. If you hadn't guessed it yet, the name is a play on the 1960's TV sitcom I Dream of Jeannie. The logo on the sign depicts a hot dog that looks like genie Barbara Eden. Also, check out the hot dog flower pots on the railing. I've had a couple of drive bys of this place, but on this day there was a parking space in front and I could check them out.
1955 Plymouth Belvedere This classic car is located outside of the Sunliner Diner in Pigeon Forge. The restaurant is a very touristy homage to 1950's diners.
I hope my car doesn't end up like that one Along Galltin Pk. in the Rivergate area of Nashville
Half a VW at the Lucky Rabbit As I made my photo walk around Hattiesburg, I noticed this neat store, but it's only open on Saturdays and Sundays. I guess I'd called it a quirky antique store, but it's hard to say when you can only look on the outside. The half of a Volkswagen Beetle is certainly attention-getting.
Abandoned Trolley - Ellijay, GA A while ago, I stumbled into Ellijay without knowing it's a small tourist town. It didn't seem to me to be big enough of a place to offer trolley service. When I took the photo, it appeared parked on a train track, so I thought it was one of those train track trolleys. But now that I take a closer look, it has bus wheels, so it's going down the roads. I couldn't find the story why a Cape Cod Trolley named John G and numbered 89 would be in Ellijay, so please let me know if you know why it's here.
Your Package has been Delayed. Near Tracy City, I found a yard with many old rusty machines, mostly farm equipment. They also had this rusty Post Office delivery vehicle. Does anyone recognize it? Does it predate the Post Office Jeep?

Leipers Fork 1963 Ford Galaxie Police Car This 1963 Ford Galaxie with the logo of Leipers Fork Sherriff used to be always parked in front of Puckett's Grocery. Now that parking spaces are hard to come by, they have moved it just outside of town along highway TN46. Walt's Transmission (old) - Bowling Green, KY The sign for Walt's Transmission features a strong man holding a 1960s Renault Dauphine. Walt's is located along highway US31W and I passed by twice in 2017. Between these two visits, the sign got updated. The car went from a darker red with words painted on it to an orange. Also the strongman has some color in the image - his belt buckle went from W (for Walt, I guess) to Punkin.

1953 Pontiac Chieftan - Stones River Car Club I believe this is a 1953 Pontiac Chieftan 4-Door Sedan. Feel free to correct me. This car is part of the Stones River Car Club AACA. The club is located meets at Cannonsburgh Village in Murfreesboro. When the Village was under development, a replica of a 1920's era service station was built. Often, I've found the doors to the build are closed, but when they are open, you can get this view of the Pontiac.

Abandoned Route 66: Hinton Junction Service Station Hinton Junction is a spot along old Route 66 which intersects with highway US281 in Caddo County, OK. In the early 1940s, ED Enze built a 24 hour service station, cafe and five room motel, which was called Hinton Junction Courts and Cafe. About 20 years later in 1962, this business was shut down as the creation of Interstate 40 caused motorists to no longer pass through here. I'm not sure if the Propane truck has been here since the 1960s, but it adds to the ambiance.
1948 Dodge Fuel Truck - Clinton, OK Located in Clinton, OK at the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum, this 1948 Dodge Fuel Truck has been painted orange with Phillips 66 logos. This series was manufactured from 1948 to 1953 and replaced the pre-war Dodge truck.

Abandoned Tow Truck - Cairo, IL Cairo, IL is a fascinating city. A century ago, it was a thriving city at the southern end of Illinois where rivers meet. However, a large percentage of the population leaves every decade and eventually Cairo will be a ghost town. The town has fascinating and intricate architecture, but the few remaining citizens can't save everything. A few places are actively preserved, but many places are crumbling or have been torn down.
West Winds Motel - Route 66 - Erick, OK This motel was originally built and operated by Floyd Pamplin in the late 1940s. The rusty vehicle on the left is a Ford Panel Truck from about the same time as when the hotel opened. It is on private property, so my view was taken from the street. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Winds_Motel The West Winds Motel is a historic motel located on old U.S. Route 66 in Erick, Oklahoma. The motel opened in the mid-1940s to serve travelers on Route 66; at the time, tourism drove Erick's economy, and the motel was one of several in the city. The motel had a typical motor court layout with two lodging buildings and an office forming a "U" shape around a central courtyard. The lodging buildings have a Mission Revival design with stucco walls and red metal roofs designed to resemble tile. The motel units have individual garage spaces in front of their entrances, a style which was common in the 1930s and 1940s but fell out of favor in later years. The motel was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 27, 2004.

Phillips 66 Service Station - Route 66 - McLean, TX At one time, this station had a Hampton Hotels Save-a-Landmark sign which read: Built in the 1920s as the first Phillips 66 Station in Texas, operating for more than 50 years. The plaque at the door notes this was the first Phillips 66 in Texas, was built and leased to Phillips in 1929, and was the first restored station on Route 66. Another sign here says 1928. It is also on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the McLean Commercial Historic District
Old Truck This truck, with a for-show-only covered bridge are part of the adornments along the road which leads to a closed restaurant Miller's Creek Cafe. As I do online research, they may have never been open despite much effort to create interesting surroundings. The property north of Dandridge, TN on Mill Dale Farm is centered around their 1843 Millhouse.
Chicken Piano - Honeysuckle Hill Honeysuckle Hill is a Pumpkin Patch Agritourism Site in Robertson County, TN. When a kid steps on the white or black piano keys, the corresponding chicken clucks that note. I'm not sure if you can but this in a kit, or if they created it from scratch. However, even if it came in a kit, I like the Leaning coop design they added to a Chevrolet Viking C60 truck bed.

The See Rock City painters truck From what I've been told, when the Rock City paint crew goes out to paint a barn, this is the truck they take with all their supplies. The truck looks like a birdhouse and the liscense plate is CHIRP. The rest of the year, the truck is parked in a prominent location, in the triangle where Highway 41/11/72/64 splits away from broad street. If travelling from downtown, Lookout Mountian would be in the background. The Ruby Falls painters SUV now parks next to this, but in my opinion isn't as interesting.
1915 Ford Model T - Cowan, TN This car is parked inside Cowan's vintage Texaco, which now serves as the city's welcome center. The Mechanics area also has a 1931 Ford on display. The Welcome Center has been closed most of the times I've passed through Cowan along US41A, but the car is easy to see through the window.
Beaman Motors NEW Neon Sign (2012) For decades, this sign was on Broadway (US 431/70S) in Nashville, with the vertical part reading Pontiac. The sign was taken down last March for several reasons. As they refurbished the sign, they updated it since they're more than just a Pontiac dealer now. They also wanted the sign to be visible from the interstate, so it has been newly positioned along another side of their property. The Beaman name is well known in Nashville. UPDATE: From the link that Agility Nut posted below, this is not the old sign, but a new sign made to look like the old one. The old on is now at the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati.
the See Rock City ad truck In the st. Elmo area of Chattanooga, with the base of Lookout Mtn in the background. It was parked at the corner of Broad St. and the Cummings Highway.
