In my opinion, here are some of the books on Bela:
1) The Count by Arthur Lennig-This book came out in the 70's. It is a wonderful
biography on Bela. It has many photos of him, and you learn about the
relationship between the author and Bela.
(photo not available)
2) The Immortal Count by Arthur Lennig-This is a revised version of The Count.
Published in 2003, this book is even better than its predecessor. It has lots of
rare photos and is full of biographical information on Bela.
3) Lugosi:His Life in Films, on Stage, and in the Hearts of Horror Lovers by
Gary Don Rhodes-A lot of rare photos, title speaks for itself, wonderful piece
of work.
4) Vampire Over London: Bela Lugosi in Britain by Frank Dello Stritto and Andi
Brooks-I thought I knew everything about Bela until I read this. More rare
photos with stories you may never have heard about Bela. Another masterpiece!
5) Lugosi: The Man Behind the Cape by Robert Cremer-Nice biography and cool
pictures. This book is out of print and expensive if you are lucky enough to
find it. I was lucky to find it and to find it cheap. See price
sticker.
6) Bela Lugosi (Midnight Marquee Actors Series) by Gary and Susan Svehla-Plenty
of pictures, gives some biographical information with most of the emphasis on
his films. Nice book to add to your collection.
7) The Complete Films of Bela Lugosi by Richard Bojarski-Every Bela fan must
have one of these. It is a nice guide to his stage appearances and films. Plenty
of pictures.
8) Bela Lugosi: Master of the Macabre by Larry Edwards-Biography that may not be
as accurate as the others.
Books that have a lot of Bela, but include other fine actors as well:
1) Sinister Serials of Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, and Lon Chaney Jr. by Leonard
J. Kohl-Nice work about these great actors. It has some biographical information
on Bela. If you are interested in Bela's The Whispering Shadow, The Return of
Chandu, Shadow of Chinatown, SOS Coastguard, and The Phantom Creeps, this book
is for you.
2) Karloff and Lugosi: The Story of a Haunting Collaboratoin by Gregory Mank-Great
biographical information on the two horror stars. Will help put a stop to the
many rumors surrounding the horror duo. This book is out of print. Nice
pictures. The book pictured is missing the dust jacket.
3) White Zombie by Gary Don Rhodes-Everything you wanted to know about White
Zombie is answered in this well researched book. This is one of Bela's greatest
roles.
4) A Quaint and Curious Volume of Forgotten Lore by Frank Dello Stritto-I admit
I haven't finished this one, but so far, it is a great book that is worth buying.
This book focuses on many classic films. The Lugosi films include: Dracula,
Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, Ghost of
Frankenstein, Son of Frankenstein, Island of Lost Souls, The Black Cat, Mark of
the Vampire, The Raven, and The Wolf Man. The book pictured is missing the
dust jacket.
5) Dracula: The Ultimate, Illustrated Edition of the World-Famous Vampire Play by
Hamilton Deane and John L. Balderston-Get this book if you want to learn more
about Dracula on stage. There are some nice pictures of Bela too.
6) The Dracula Scrapbook by Peter Haining-Every actor who played Dracula will
get a some attention in this book. Some actors are more detailed than others.
There are some Bela pictures that you have seen many times and others not as
much. It is a mixed bag of fun for vampire fans.
7) Hollywood Gothic: The Tangled Web of Dracula from Novel to Stage to Screen by
David Skal- This book is more detailed than book number 5. It is basically the
same kind of material, just more of it. Great book!
8) A Pictorial History of the Movie Villain-The Bad Guys by William K.
Everson-Since Bela played bad guys most of the time, you can expect him in this
book. There aren't too many photos of him since he has to share.
9) Dracula: The Original Shooting Script produced by Philip J. Riley-Obviously
gives you the Dracula 1931 script, common and rare pictures of Bela, gives
information on the other actors in the Dracula films, music, info on the
director of the 1931 film, introduction by Bela Lugosi. Definitely, a keeper.
10) Classics of The Horror: From the Days of the Silent Film to The Exorcist by
William K. Everson-Title speaks for itself, Bela films include: Son of
Frankenstein, Ghost of Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, Frankenstein Meets the
Wolfman, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, White Zombie, Island of Lost
Souls, The Black Cat, Mark of the Vampire, The Body Snatcher, Dracula, Murders
in the Rue Morgue, and The Raven. The pictures are mostly common, but you may
see some you've never seen before. There aren't too many photos of Bela because,
again, he has to share.
11) More Classics of The Horror Film: Fifty Years of Great Chillers by William K.
Everson-More of the same as above, nice section of 8 pictures of Bela and Boris
at the back of the book.
12) Dracula: Everything You Always Wanted to Know About the Man, the Myth, and
the Movies by Clare Haworth-Maden-A nice photo collection of different actors
portraying Dracula. Yes, Bela included.
13) Frankenstein (Same series as above) by Robert Jameson-Not as many pictures of
Bela as in the Dracula book. But you and I know that he was in a few
Frankenstein movies as well. Nice pictures.
14) Poverty Row Horrors by Tom Weaver-Focuses on Monogram, PRC, and Republic
Horror movies of the 1940s. Bela movies include: The Devil Bat, The Invisible
Ghost, Spooks Run Wild, Black Dragons, The Corpse Vanishes, Bowery at Midnight,
The Ape Man, Ghosts on the Loose, Voodoo Man, and Return of the Ape Man. Handful
of Bela pictures.
Speaking of B movies, here is my ranking of the Bela films from most liked to
least liked:
Bowery at Midnight
The Return of the Ape Man
The Devil Bat
The Invisible Ghost
The Corpse Vanishes
Voodoo Man
Black Dragons
Spooks Run Wild
The Ape Man
Ghosts on the Loose
DVD Collection
Universal has come out with a nice collection of some of Bela's greatest roles. The movies include: Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Black Cat, The Raven, The Invisible Ray, and Black Friday. Trailers are also included. Great buy!
Documentaries
In my opinion, this is the best documentary out there.
CDs
Do you remember the movie Dracula coming out with music included? Well, here is the music.
Here is the soundtrack to the best documentary pictured first.
Toccata and Fugue in D Minor is in two of Bela's films. Can you remember which ones? If you said The Black Cat and The Raven, you were correct.
This soundtrack also includes The Invisible Ray Suite
Bela Lugosi movies include: Dracula, The Wolf Man, Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman, The Invisible Ghost, The Ghost of Frankenstein
Magazines
These kind of magazines usually have a lot of Bela in them. The last one called Dracula is actually a comic book with drawings that look just like the 1931 movie. The Screen Facts at the end was bought off of ebay. It was printed in 1964.
Albums
I found this on ebay.
