January 18, 1990: Landing Officer, a 23-1 long shot, wins a $2,220 claiming
race in thick fog at Delta Downs in Vinton, Louisiana.  Later jockey
Sylvester Carmouche is suspended, stripped of his winnings, and arrested by
police for attempted felony by fraud.  He is accused of pulling up soon after
the race began, losing himself and his mount in the fog, and rejoining the one-
mile race when the other horses came all the way around the track and headed
toward the finish line.

January 21, 1990: John McEnroe leads Mikael Pernfors, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5, 2-4, in
the Australian Open when he's disqualified for using abusive language during
a disagreement about officiating.  He is the first player in 27 years to be
thrown out of a Grand Slam tennis tournament.

This Week's obscure word:FARRAGINOUS
Forming a disordered whole

This semester I plan to send an additional piece of mail with the list.  Many
of them may take a good while to read.  This week's is a list of humorous
answering machine messages.  Enjoy!
