this is what a road looks like that was paved over 90 years ago and serves no purpose anymore. Today, the road goes nowhere (unless you own the farmland here). There used to be a bridge called Swinging Bridge that crossed the Cumberland River in the northeast corner of the county. It was built so that there could be easy access for many employees from Madison to work at the Dupont plant in the Old Hickory community as they made gunpowder during World War 1. That bridge was originally built for pedestrians but when they determined it was safe for cars, one at a time was allowed to cross. It was a suspension bridge and not what we think of today as a swinging bridge, but it was given that name because of the way it swayed.
